Just bought a 2002 Explorer XLS. It has the 16" 5 spoke wheels. It has 255 70 16 Tires on it. I called the locl Discunt tire to price new tires, and the sales, service person said that the XLS take a 245 width tire.,.....Wondering if these wheels might be an updgrade, and if the 255 is correct?

it should say on the door sticker, inside the drivers door what size,,

235 or 245 most likely. Why don't you want 255? :)

That number (235,245,255) refers to the width of the tire. Our explorers will fit up to a 265 width tire with no rubbing. Obviously, the wider the tire the more contact and grip it will have with the ground. I would buy a 255 or 265 width tire. It will give your ex a wider stance and increase its maneuverability.

The hard part is that ford only recommends a 235-245 width tire, and most shops will only sell you those. Most of the modded explorers run 265's and just buy them online. They are mailed to you then it's like $15 a piece to have them mounted and balanced at your local tire shop.
