2002 explorer 4.6ltr thermostat question

recently purchased and noticing that the temp gauge barely comes above the cold line. it blows some heat but don't know if this is normal for this? should it be closer to center?

The thermostat may be out, or may have failed. Premium thermostats (don't know about OE) are often designed to fail open.

The needle doesn't even begin to move until around 134 degrees. If it's above the first tick you are probably running around 170.
Buy a new tstat and o-ring. Cheap and easy.
 






Where is the stat located? Do I have to remove other parts to get to it or is it just in the open, remove couple bolts and throw in?

It's located right where the upper hose meets the engine. You need to drain enough anti freeze so that the upper hose is empty. Otherwise, opening the tstat housing will allow antifreeze to possible fill your spark plug holes on the drivers side.
