2002 Explorer Sport Sub question

Ok, here we go. My stock subwoofer is taking a crap, i believe its torn. I found out through use of the search button that it is an 8 inch sub. So in knowing this i went to a car audio place near me and talked to the guys there. They told me that my best bet is to go and get a factory sub. They said that just replacing the sub would sound like crap, they've done it in a few already... that i should put an Amp in and than a sub. I really like how my sub and everything is hidden, and would prefer to keep it that way. Besides that, its easier, and less expensive to just replace the sub, so thats the route id rather go. Those of you that have had expierence doing this, does it really sound like crap just replacing the sub with an aftermarket one, or better, or what? Thanks in advance guys

Depends how important the sound is to you. You could replace the stock sub with an MTX or JL audio stealth unit for $300-600 and have it look just as hidden as before. Or you can custom make a stealth box and mount the amp somewhere where nobody will see it. Stock sub won't sound as good as the MTX or JL, which'll sound similar if a little worse than a custom setup.

The JL Stealthbox will sound great, the sub is picked by the aiize of the box, & it will be hidden, but u will need to add a aftermarket amp.

Question, I have a 2002 Explorer XLS. Does it have a factory subwoofer/amp? I just figured it was head unit + speakers. How can I tell if I have the woofer or not?
