hi guys so i have a problem here....i own a 2002 sport trac and it will not crank but everything still turns on all the lights and what not but when i try to start it ..i get nothing i dont even get a click or slow crank to signify a dead battery ....so that poses my question for all you sport trac experts out there what the heck is going on.... but anyways the check engine ligh it on and the check guage light is on and stays on permently ....but heres the weird thing i was just driving it like there was not a single problem with it and get home do some things and have to leave again and thats when i figured this all out that it just simply does not crank over or anything so i would appreciate your help and it is very much needed as i can not pay for a tow truck or a mechanic nor will i pay some random person to work on my vehicle i do everything myself dont trust people with something that could potentially kill me lol...but i would love to hear what you guys have to say about whts wrong ......ooo and when i popped the hood and had another person try to start the truck i hear a light click coming from the fuse panel right on the fire wall is that normal as in does it always click everytime the truck tries to start

Might be you ignition or could be your shifter my truck has a problem of a loose shifter and it won't start sometimes if the shifter isn't all the way over into drive same as if I shut the truck off and it won't let the key go because my shifter isn't all the way in park

I agree with swshawaii, batteries are strange creatures. I work part time for Advance Auto Parts and do a lot of battery testing. Sometimes just because you dont get the delay start or click, doesn't mean battery. Check all your cables for the battery and starter look for breaks and corrosion build up.

so as of now i can say that its not the shifter getting stuck because i put it in neutral and tried to start and still nothing and then made sure that it was put all the way in park and still nothing and as for the battery i made sure all cables are good and check for good connection and all is fine and i even tried to jump the truck to see if it was a weak battery and still no results .....i am wondering if it could be a fuse is the power control box on the fire wall next to the brake booster .....and i can try to take the battery to get it tested but i still dont think that it would be the battery because i am getting good connection on all cables and i still have full power in everything else in the truck and i even jumped the truck and that didnt work .....and i cant take the truck itself to get it scanned because obviously it wont start to be able to take it down to get it scanned lol...

You could have a bad cell in the battery, I know it's a pita but if you have a battery you could replace yours with that you know is good, you could try that.

what happens to the "theft" light in the dash?

well.....first thing is first....how many volts is the battery putting
out when the key is in the "start" position....???

does it go from 12.4, 12.5 to 9.0, 8.5...???? or does it move at all..???

you need to find out why you have no power to the starter, OR IF YOU DO.

if you do, and you have power to the little wire, when your starter is fried.

if no power to the little wire, and some to it....see what happens..
does it crank...??? if so something possibly with the ign. switch.

the absolute first first thing to do though.....is to check ALL the fuses..TWICE.
even pulling them out for a visual, if all is good, then go with the
forementioned.

good luck man

:salute:

yeh sorry to say it but it sounds to me like a bad starter. since the battery is easy to get at take it out and go to napa, autozone, oreilly's, etc. and get it tested if alls good on the battery test i would venture to guess your culprit is the starter.

the relay you hear clicking up at the firewall under the hood is normal thats the starter relay as you turn the ignition to start the 12V+ goes through the relay and to the starter signal wire the smaller wire at the starter. that wire is what "signals" the solenoid to engage the starter motor in turn turning over the motor.

since all you get is a click of the relay and no motor turn its either a shot battery or the starter.

so long story short get the battery tested, then if that comes back all good start tackling the starter

EDIT: starters and alternators can be bench tested at auto stores as well so before purchasing anything get them to test what you got first

alrighty guys i appreciate all the responses and help but i have figured it all out and you are all wrong lol .....not the battery not the starter doesnt have anything to do with the theft light or low voltage lol... but it does have to do with the dealer i bought the car from had a gps put on it and apparently he got me mixed up with another person and had basically shut my truck down as in somthing in the gps system allows them to make it to where you can not start the car and it has been confirmed because i got a call from them telling me that it was their mistake and it will be turned back on ....but i thank everyone for all the info and assistance

The DEALER figured it out. Your GPS issue would have been difficult, if not impossible to diagnose on line. Glad it's fixed.

haha....exactly

and essentially it WAS, IN FACT A STARTER ISSUE.
the starter was disabled, via (the little wire) through the GPS.
which by the way, those can be bypassed by cutting 2 wires, and
reconnecting, simply bypassing the GPS, but most of the time they
hide them well, and most people just don't know what it is.

anywho.....glad "you got it figured out"...

:salute:

... does that mean the dealer still owns the truck, and if payments stop - the truck will stop?

I have a 2001 Gen 2, No GPS on it. I have a similar issue, Get all the light but wont turn over, no click, nothing. I put the shifter in natural, still nothing, Back in park, nothing. Battery is good. All I do is flip the key over and it cranks. I have tried several time to make it break, but it will crank and start every time. Real intermittent. Any Ideas?

Intermittent problems are related to bad grounds 95% of the time. Check your ground wires to your battery and the starter. Also could be a dirty fuse or relay. My bet is something with a bad electrical connection.

I just had the exact problem today and I went out after reading all the responses and I put it in neutral and back in park and it started. I had it in park but I guess it wasn’t in enough. May be worth a try
