2002 Sport Trac
OK, so we are currently in the process of buying a 2k2 Sport-Trac, and I just had some general questions about the truck, and 4wd vehicles in general. I hope this is the correct area.

1) I have read and learned that either the Motorcraft or PureOne oil filters are the ones to use. As for oil, I typically use a synthetic blend in my cars. Would the 4X4 oils be recommended? This truck isn't expected to see much off-roading.

2) Extended Warranty: I a considering 2 plans, ExtraCARE and PremiumCARE. Extra covers most major items; Premium covers all of Extra, plus emissions, audio, and safety (air bag, ABS, etc). Now both warranties will probably have $100 deductible. Has anyone had emissions problems or abs sensor failure in their sport (-trac)?

3) With the premium sound, there is a small subwoofer behind the rear seats. Would replacing the stock speaker with an aftermarket one enhance the sound, or would replacing the whole sub/amp/box with new units be recommended. I will probably end up keeping the 6-disc in dash unit, partly because of the rear controls.

Any other things I should check and or do to help drivability, performance, or mileage would be appreciate. I did a search for sport trac, does most, if not all the information for the explorer sport also apply? Thanks again..

welcome to the site!

1. I would use a k&n because of how well it filters. but thats just a personal opinion.

2. Premium is always good:D . I havent had any problems on my 99 but you never know right.

3. You could replace the speaker but buying a new aftermarket amp/speaker/box will really improve sound quality.

check for rust, mileage, belt wear, just normal things you'd check when buying any car.

I hope its a good buy and i hope you enjoy it man! just wait till the modding bug bites you;)

The only thing that I've noticed with my '03 Sport Trac is the crappy gas milage! Other than that, an excellent vehicle. I do work for a Ford dealership and the only thing that Sport Tracs have been in for are routine service. Some of the '02 - '04 models have an emissions recall, that's the only thing you might want to inquire about.

Thanks for the quick replies. I will porbably get a k&n air filter, but I didn't know they made oil filters too. I have one more question I forget earlier.

Cleaning the floors. What would be the best to use on the rubber floor. Amour-All would be bad because it is so slick. So is there any dressing/prep to put down to make them look nice with-out being to slick or attracting too much dirt.

I can't wait. I pick it up tomorrow.

The easiest ( not neccessarily the quickest) way is a bucket with soap and water. That way you don't have the slickness of a spray and you don't have to worry about soaking your interior!

1. I use Motorcraft filters and Mobil 1 synthetic oil in both my Explorers. One reason, because they are both good and 2nd because they are both available at Walmart at a good price.

2. I once had an ABS sensor go out, but I was still under warranty at that time. It went out while I was thoroughly washing down the truck after driving it on the beach. If one goes out now, I'll probably go to a junkyard to get the next one.

3. I don't know. I still have all stock stereo stuff. I don't listen to the stereo when offroading and I don't like giving someone a reason to break into my truck.
But, there is a member that I know of here that is into stereo stuff specifically for the Sport Trac. He makes and sells subwoofer enclosers for ST owners that didn't have the factory one or want to replace the factory one.
