We have an 02 4x4 Expl. with the 4.0, 3.55 rear end and auto.
There is a noticeable tranny slipage between 2nd and third, third and fourth, usually under light acceleration.
Dealer says, normal.
Any other owner notice an unusual amount of tranny slippage?
One magazine review of this model did mention a slushy transmission.
However, in my past experience with Ford Service, anything they don't want to fool with is "normal"

There are not too many 2002 Explorer's on this board yet. Everyone who I know that has a Ford with an auto tranny says there is slippage including myself and my dad. I guess it is normal for Ford transmissions to slip. Hopefully someone with a 2002 will reply soon.

Is the explorer broken in yet? Mine has 2800 miles so far. Shifting is still pretty hard though

Could just be the new transmission. If the magazine said it was sloppy, then that's what you got. Is it me or is technology getting worse? No offense, but the 2002 is without a doubt directed to minivan owners that want 4wd. It's as close as you can get to being in a minivan without actually being IN a minivan.

My 2001 hunts for OD around 40mph and can't make up it's mind what gear it should be in until you hit the gas, then it shifts into OD and then it shifts back down.....at 40. When I goto accellerate onto the hwy, it'll shift into OD at about 45-50 and then I have to push it all the way to the floor to get it to the right gear for entering the hwy. Truning off the OD everytime I trun on the car does get to be a pain after a while.

Those tranny engineers got some good drugs.
