DANG!!!! you just got that on... it looked so good.... any chance you can save the bar.... wow all of that at only 25mph. Glad everyone is ok! Thats proof that suv's are very good cars, safe and can take an impact!

We've had to claim through insurance, as the other car will be a write-off, so we will get a nice new bar; this time powdercoated in black or grey (black is my preference).

The missus was thinking about it today, and she reckons given the reaction time, she may have been doing more like 60km/h (40mph) - she's not really sure; but she wasn't speeding and wasn't tailgaiting - it's just the woman in front braked to a stop at the last minute, and very unexpectedly, which gave little time for her to react, though she was already slowing anyway, as the next set of lights was already turning red and she was pretty much aiming to stop at them.

^ that happens so often^

People dont realize when they stomp on the brakes someone could be behind them.

That's pretty much what the cops on the scene said - the fact that the set of lights had a red light camera was probably the biggest contributor to the accident; the lady stated that she didn't want to get a ticket for going through a red light (it had just turned amber, so she had around 5 seconds before the red and would have got through no worries). My wife and I were both taught to look behind you when the light goes amber - if there is someone, don't stop as you can't always tell if they're going to. This lady had no idea there was anyone behind her, let alone a 2 tonne wrecking ball called an explorer.

Strewth Johno, thats a real bummer man

Yep - but the missus was glad we had the bar on in the end; she now won't drive my falcon with the kids in the car, as it would've been a lot worse had she been in that instead. So looks like I'll have to go hunting for a second 4wd/SUV; I'm thinking Territory at this stage - even a 2WD one would do.
