i just got a 2004 explorer 4.0l v6 and today on my way home my truck just died.. it would turn over just not start. i had a friend with me and i had him hold down the fuel reset button. he had to bend down and hold that button in for about 20mins..and every time he sliped the truck would die and wed have to restart. we got to the shop and the guy tells me the iac valve needs replaced..looking threw the forms i see there isnt even a iac valve..so what do i need to do?

There is an idle air control valve.

First, I would suggest picking up a $15 Haynes repair manual for the truck before doing any repairs. Not only does it have the IAC Valve replacement listed in it with pictures, it will also come in handy for future repairs.

As a hint, the IAC Valve is under the square plastic cover to the left of your block. The cover uses two star-head screws to undo it, and your IAC is the contraption that has the hoses running into it.

My honest opinion, is that it's not your IAC unless the wrench at the shop did a code scan and your IAC came up as malfunctioning. Your IAC is exactly that...idle air control. I think your issue involves fuel delivery. Fuel pump would be my first guess, but you need to have it properly diagnosed and tested with the fuel pressure test before taking the plunge on the $300 part + labor.

By the way, if you just want to see if it's the IAC, they are about $40 from rockauto.com They are about $100 or more from any big box auto parts store.

hold on, . . . you need to verify to be 100%, i thought '04 v6 got the fly-by-wire too. . .no throttle cable? I have an '04 v8 and its fly by wire, not only did they eliminate the cable but also the IAC. . .

i'd check the fuel pressure as suggested, could be a fuel filter, fuel pump, if that checks out. . .throttle body - motor or sensor could be shot. Who know it might be the fuel cutoff switch, not sure what holding it would do? or what that says?
But for something like this you should see a CEL? or be able to pull codes (hopefully).

i did have it scanned and he said IAC. its gettin great fuel pressure so i dont think its that. i am going to get a haynes book. thanks for the info guys
