:us: Gentlemen, I love my '04 ST. I have 118k miles on it. Its paid off (finally). I was wondering if anyone has replaced the 4.0 engine with a Mustang GT 5.0 H.O? Is this even possible? I want to kick my truck in the butt! What are some the best mods to do for speed/sound/look till I figure this out? :us:

If you're interested in a swap find a wreck '01 Explorer with the 5.0 and it will be nearly a direct swap.

That would be one wild ride with an empty bed and a 2WD 5.0.

That was my thinking. I have always wanted to see what I can get performance wise out of it. I have come across the superchip hand held that will plug in under dash and reprogram your computer (can be reversed) they claim you will add 20-25 hp to your truck, plus it will remove the speed gov. Its also a code reader. Anyone out there used one? Thanks for that earlier reply.

the best route is to get an X3 programmer. We have a sponsor on here who does alot of tunes for alot of people (including me ^_^) The guys name is james henson and his site is www.hensonperformance.com He can hook you up with an X3 programmer and 3 custom tunes for $389. I personally got an 87 an 89 and a 93 tune all street/performance and i love it. The tranny shifts firmer, it has better shift points and definately has more power. all in all definately more fun to drive and worth the investment. His number is on his site (top right corner) just call him up and he'll help you get what your looking for and what you need to do. ^_^

There are some computer and especially PATS key issues between 01's and 04's. Not impossible to get around, but it's work. Easiest swap is between an 01 Sport Trac and 01 Explorer. Do a Search, there is a pretty extensive post around here on how to do it.

If you swap EVERYTHING there won't be a PATS issue. You will be running off the older PATS system however.

If you're committed to it, do the 5.0 swap. There's so much more you can do with the V8. Shouldn't be too hard to pick up an '01 from a salvage yard. Aim for an Eddie or a Limited and you can snag the goodies out of it; ACC and trip computer.

If you didn't know, the 97-01 Explorer's with 5.0L v8's came with the GT40P heads. It seems those are very desirable heads on the 5.0L engines.

Also the programmer you want is an Xcal II< or III. The Xcal II is plenty and best bang for the buck. It is the best mod you can do, in my opinion. You can do so much with it. Take the rev limiter off for one, cahnge tranny shift points, timing , air fuel ratios and so on. This is by far the best tuner I have used and I used 2 others.

5.0 swap sounds fun for in a few years when my sport trac is paid off
