It is called an ABS sensor ring. I believe you must remove the axle to have a new one pressed in place. Out of warranty?

I just replaced this myself last friday. Same location even! If you would liek me to give you a step by step let me know. It'll take a couple hours. Dealer will charge 2-300$ if you have them do it.

Thanks for the responses. I just got back from my friends shop where it ended up having to be towed, because of the false readings it went into a limp mode of some sort. Any way the part was $25 and I threw my friend $100 for his time. He did take the whole axle out and "pressed" the new ring on using the old one as a buffer between a punch and the new ring. I called it a tone ring, he called it an exciter ring... why wold they ever make them exposed?

well its not that they are exposed that is the issue, its that they were too thin. Ford realized this after the thousands that have broken and come in for service, and the replacement part is now twice the thickness. Some vehicles have the same concept inside the differential as well. Its just another way of doing it. I didn't have to remove my axle to put my new one on, i just unbolted everything, swung the hub out of the way, and tapped a new one on with a brass punch. It was a pain in the butt, but it worked fine.

Great I think I juste found someone with the same problem I had!!..... When you say your truck went on a limp mode, did it just run slow and as soon as you pressed on the gas, it seemed like all the brakes went on and there was a big ''clicclicclicclicclicclicclic'' sound comming from somewhere??

I went to a garage and the guy tried to figure out the problem and he couldn't so he told me to remove the two ABS fuses. It didn't came back after that... could I have the same problem you had with the false reading??

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THIS POST!!!!!!!

I thought those gap were supposed to be there! Both of mine are cracked!

Hello to all,

I own a 2006 ford explorer. My abs sensor ring has a crack. I want to replace the ring. However, I do not know where to purchase the ring. I have checked autozone and autozone advance. I need to know where can I purchase the item online.

Thank you,

I suggest getting it at the dealer. They're not that expensive, and the replacement rings are thicker (at least that's what I've heard) than the factory ones.

Hey sandy01,

Would this be what you are looking for, http://www.FordParts.com/Commerce/C...aGlzdG9yeQUEdHJ1ZbeJQwrDnn1brKWLK+LH7viyyDAr? You can use this site, FordParts.com to find VIN specific parts for your Explorer. I hope this helps.

tone ring is about 30 bucks from ebay

Same problem in my 06 Exploder. ABS/Traction Control light was coming on every time we reached 10 MPH for the first time and would stay on until we shut the car down. Right rear sensor code led me to replace the speed sensor, but it had no effect, so I checked the tone ring (like I should have in the first place!) and it was cracked and opened up. Replaced that and now the ABS/Traction Control light comes on and off sporadically. I am pretty sure the tone ring went on true. I didn't have a press, but heated it up and tapped it on very patiently (without damaging it) - it measured 150 mm from outer edge to the axle tip at four points (NSEW). My next thought is maybe the air gap between the speed sensor and the new ring is too wide - it was set for the broken (and expanded) ring. But I can't find a spec anywhere for that gap. Anyone know the spec and/or have any ideas what else might cause a sporadic signal? Anyone know if these are active or passive sensors?

Ford manul says nothing about gap just bolt it back in, i heard a 1/4 in is ok

Thanks! May be a wiring issue. Solenoid in evap system had a bad wire and I'm have an unexplained right pretensioner code too. They're all in the same harness and a new pretensioner and speed sensor did nothing. I'll update after checking the circuit.

Update - you might recall I traced my problem down to a cracked tone ring on the passenger side, replaced it and was still getting a sporadic ABS/Traction Control light. I struggled with a few more tests on the passenger side wiring, sensor, etc., and finally pulled my head out of my arse long enough to actually check the code to make sure the same side was having the problem. Turns out the driver's side rear sensor was tripping the code and the toner ring cracked on that side too. Must have cracked on my test ride after replacing the passenger side, because it was fine when I looked at it after discovering the passenger side was toast. I replaced the passenger side and the lights literally came back on during that test ride, so I assumed it was something I did on install. Replaced the other side last night and its perfect again. That's just what I needed diagnosing an electrical issue...an unusual coincidence. :-/
