So did it work? Did you go out and drive it yet?

Drove it. The CEL and ABS light went off (as expected) but the speedo still does not work.
I am now questioning the place that installed my head unit...because the speedo stopped worked right after they installed the headunit (clipped a wire maybe?)

Yarp! I would check the speedo actuator to see if its getting any voltage.

I'm guessing I'm going to need a multimeter and where is said actuator?

A multimeter or a cheap Voltmeter - Heck even an LED light would probably work (it may burn out after a few seconds tho - most LEDs are not rated for 12v)

I just drove to the Ford stealership and back to return the uneened VSS and my CEL came back on. I'm guessing it's gonna say vehicle speed sensor...
ABS light hasn't came back on (yet) hopefully that problem is done.

Damn Speedo

Please Tell Me What Happens I Have The Same Problem Explorer Sport 98 2wd Speedo Doesnt Work...had The Same Problems With Autozone And Parts America...tomorrow Im Gonna Change The Rear Abs Sensor...to see What Happens ...if You Fixed Your Speedo Please Tell Me How...
Thx :fire:

I also would like to hear an update from iwantmyfastcarb.

Indeed, the VSS on a 98 is the same sensor that the ABS uses on the rear diff. Ford simplified things and said, "What the heck? We've got two sensors taking the same readings, we'll use one sensor for both."

I don't care what the "book" says. Their "book" doesn't show you WHERE it is and is, therefore, wrong. Trust us.

Just stumbled across this and my speedometer took a crap too. I checked my fuses and relays, tore open my dash and checked for loose connections but I didn't see anything undone, broken, or blown. I did just replace the VSS and my speedometer still isn't working. CEL code pulled was for the VSS. I'm thinking my VSS might just be shot out of the box since I have no idea what else it could be. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. 1999 Ford Explorer Sport, 4.0 OHV only 2wd

I'm still dealing with my VSS problem. Non-ford pro mechanics can seem to find it. I can't either. I refuse to take it to the stealership, espeically since I just spent $100 on two sensors.

Does anyone know the exact location of the VSS on a 2000 explorer sport ohv?
Diagrams, schmatics would be AWESOME....TIA

Back of transmission or side back

1999 vss is in the rear axle
The wires go to the abs pump and then the signal is buffered down to 8000 pulses per mile and sent to the pcm dash and others

What vss code are you getting?

171 and 174 You need Intake o ring gaskets

And

P0401
Egr flow insufficient
You need to check the the hoses and possibly replace the dpfe

None of those are for speed sensor

Ok thanks what about po500

P0500
The pcm is not happy with a speed sensor
Does the speedometer work?
