hey guys, i have an 07 sport trac limtd with the 4.0..Ive noticed an exhaust rattle thats gotten progressively worse over time. all the hangers and heat shields are ok so after looking around locating the noise ive come to the conclusion that there is something loose or come apart inside the actual muffler. After calling about 6-7 local auto parts stores NOT ONE can find an aftermarket cat-back for this truck! not even midas.. stopped in the dealer and even they had a hard time finding a factory one but they did for $900 w/o labor which is absolutey redicilious. Do i have any other options? i really dont want a performance one that will make the truck all noisey. can i cut out the muffler and weld in a muffler from a standard 4.0 explorer non-sport trac and keep my existing pipes? i'd appreciate any suggestions at this point..thanks

Jamie

Most likely the innards of the muffler have fallen apart. I have a Gibson cat-back on mine, very easy to install. AFAIK it is the only cat-back available for a Gen 2. Got it from Summit Racing, about $350 for the aluminized steel system. Their stainless steel system is about $600. I washed it with Dawn, roughed it up with some sandpaper, and painted it with silver hi-temp paint before I installed it. Three years later it still looks like new.

Picked up 3 mpg on the highway too.

thanks for the info Johnny..
how much louder did it make your truck?
do you have a trailer hitch on yours? i have a factory hitch and would want to make sure that wouldnt be in the way of the gibson..

Much. The wife hates it, so I figure it's about right. :D

All Gen 2's have a factory hitch. The Gibson exits behind the left rear wheel, nowhere near the hitch. IF you have an Adrenaline then you will need to have some pipe bending done if you want to keep the rear exit.

We did have to scrounge up some shorter bolts and springs for the flange at the cat, the stockers are too long for the Gibson flange and bottom out. You will need to cut the OE system just ahead of the rear axle with a hacksaw or Sawzall to remove it. Otherwise all the hangers and stuff were right where they needed to be. The pipe is larger at 2.5" and you will need to adjust it carefully around the rear suspension so it doesn't hit anything. I did end up cutting a few inches off the end because the pipe pretty much filled in the stainless steel tip, it is shiny and looks purty. A bud of mine has a transmission shop and we did it there on a lift so it only took us a half-hour. Lying on your back in your driveway will take longer but it is not difficult.

MagnaFlow also makes a catback for 07+ Sport Trac's... item number 16679
Got mine from Hotexshaust with discount code "fordtruck8" for a total of

Sub Total: $518.04
Coupon Discount: -$129.51
Sub Total: $388.53

Free shipping also. Mine actually cost 407$ cause they added tax for my order since i am in canada and they ship from both canada and the USA. Full SS catback. :)

Good deal. I paid around $350 or $360 and mine isn't stainless.
At the time I got mine back in '08 Gibson was the only kit I could find. Some people like the Magnaflow sound better but I've never heard one on a V6 myself. I know I like the sound of Magnaflows on a Mustang GT better than Flowmasters.
