Mounty just hit 80,000 and I'm going to do service work on it. Here are some things that I plan to do and some things I have questioned doing.

Plan to do:
Spark plugs
Transmission filter
Fuel filter

Question doing:
Differential service
Axle service
Pcv valve

Any input or suggestions greatly appreciated... Thanks in advance!

What engine is it and is it AWD? Also, the fuel filter is an every 30K mile change interval.

Its the base model with the 4.0 V6. I've only had it for 8,000 miles so I'm not sure what's already been done.

Ok, so the transmission filter is a lifetime unit so just a fluid change is all that is really required and it is easier to find a shop that has the machine to pull the fluid out and pump the fresh in (be sure to change the fluid in the transfer case too). As far as the questionable items look up the service intervals on them, but I believe they are not due until at least 100K miles.

The filter on the tranny isn't a lifetime unit and I already have the part, I called my local transmission to confirm. As far as flushing the system its really pretty easy to do at home as long as you have a clean and some good clean hose. Thanks for the input! :-)

I knew you would say that about the filter (lots of discussion on here about that, just going by what the Ford service manuals say). And you are right about being able to do it at home, but to me paying a shop $80.00 in labor is money well spent.

Haha Yeah I feel more comfortable servicing it than going by the manual. It may just be another one of those American made automobile scams to get more money out of us like when they put fuel pumps in the tank with no access panel from the interior like foreign autos have.

Do you know if the vehicle has been used to tow anything? Look at the hitch for paint scrapped off inside the square receiver opening. If so, that's probably a vote in favor of doing those questionable items (axle & diff fluids). The service manual/schedule includes those concerns.

I think the only thing worth doing before the manual suggests would be oil changes and the spark plugs. Spark plugs are only really important to do early for V8 models.
