Hi guys,
I'm selling my wheels from my 2017 explorer sport, I just was wondering if someone can confirm that they are the same pattern and fit all 2011-2017 explorers?

thanks

FYI, bought a set of brand new take offs fom a 2017 for my 2014. I kept getting a tire pressure sensor error. Took the Explorer to Discount Tire and was informed the 2017 Explorer wheels do not use TPMS sensors. A computer monitors the rpm of each wheel and if one get out of spec due to a low tire it will turn on a warning light. I had to have TPMS sensors installed in the wheels and since the tires were brand new Discount Tire sold me road hazard.

I can assure you that the 2017 wheels DO have TPMS sensors. I had to get new sensors put in the wheels I used for Winter because when the ones in them were not compatible with the 2017 TPMS system which shows tire pressures for each of the 4 wheels. The sensors I had in the Winter wheels and which I had previously used on a 2014 MKT with the same system as your 2014 Explorer only provided a warning that a tire was low but did not specify which one. Looks like you went through the reverse procedure.

These were brand new 2017 wheels and they did not have TPMS sensors. The guy at Discount Tire even pointed to the rubber valve stems. Could different models be different and/or Canada models.

some tire shop experts are morons, the Explorers use rubber TPMS stems with a module inside the wheel, you can easily tell since the valve stem has a step on it, but 2016 up use a different sensor I think and isn't compatible with earlier vehicles. Vehicles are starting to use non sensor TPMS now and use the ABS sensors etc to get the tire diameter to determine if they have proper air in them.

Valve on the right has TPMS style stem, the sensor unbolts from the bottom

As reserved50 pointed out the 2017 does have sensors; http://parts.autonationfordwhitebea...onitor-components-scat/?part_number=f2gz1a189. They are not compatible with pre 2016 models which I also pointed out. All 2016 and 2017 trim levels use those. Pre 2016 Explorers use a different one.
BTW, my Highlanders had ABS sensors.

a tire shop or dealer can also check if theres a sensor in the rim and its working by using a TPMS scan tool, so theres no reason they should have to physically remove the tire:D

Yeah our previous VW also used the ABS sensors for it's measurement for PSI (rotation RPM vs the other wheels but would not provide PSI readings at all. Cheaper version for sure but meeting the needs of TPMS. I suspect our Subaru does the same since sadly I can't see the PSI per tire on it (wish I could).

Does the Explorer share the same bolt pattern with other Fords and can you fit/use them safely?

Don't know about all Fords but the Winter wheels I used on my 2014 Lincoln I used this past Winter on my 2017 Explorer. Unless someone has the info on hand they will likely have to do an Internet search anyway. Lots of helpful info out there.

I'm thinking ahead to acquiring winter wheels and tires... What is the smallest diameter wheel that would fit a 2017 Explorer Sport?

18". That is what I'm using. I bought the 18" steel Interceptor wheels from the dealer. I initially used them on my 2014 MKT and now use them on my Platinum.
Using a 245/65R18 tire would give you a diameter variance of 1.7%
A 235/65R18 would be an exact match at 0%. The maximum variance should not exceed 3%.

How much did the interceptor wheels cost you? Do the interceptor wheels differ from regular steel wheels?

Interceptor wheels are designed for better cooling of the brakes and hopping curbs:)

They usually fit like OEM wheels because they are, no fitment isues for the center bore or brake clearance also. Make sure you get center caps or water will tend to rust the area between the wheel and the brake rotor, if not, grease or lube the area where the wheel sits

I got 18" wheels and tires for my 17 Sport as well.

They are different from the regular generic steel wheels they sell. The wheels were listed at $102.95 and I got them for $88 each plus tax. That was in October 2014. If you want the centre caps then you will also have to change the wheel nuts. The bottom picture is the regular steel wheel with a full wheel cover that I had on my 2011 Limited.
