2014 Explorer XLT
I've searched & read, with no success.
2014 XLT just had new, 2017 18" XLT wheels & tires installed. (Old 14 tires/wheels are gone)
At first, no light or fault...approx. 30 miles later- Warning light & Message "Tire monitoring Fault"

No issues putting truck into "Learn mode"
Issue is:
Getting any tire to react to TPMS19 trigger tool per instructions. No joy.
Tried dropping air pressure trick on relearn ( after confirming 35 psi all around) No Joy.
Tried 20mph drive for 15 min after attempting relearn. No Joy.

Seller confirms/swears wheels were removed at dealer and tires stayed on wheels..., "sensors are still in tires" (so Im told, haven't confirmed)

So, the questions are: are 2017 TPMS sensors same frequency as 2014 truck? Any way to confirm aside from trip to dealer & pull tire off rim? Is the TPMS19 tool compatible w/ 2017 sensors?
Thanks-

You will need a new set of sensors. Those designed for the 2017 models will not work with your 2014. I just finished going the other way. I installed the Winter wheels I used on my previous 2014 MKT on my 2017 Platinum and had to change all 4 sensors. The difference is that the ones designed for the pre 2016 models reported a problem from any wheel to trigger the TPMS alarm. The 2016/17 sensors report each individual wheel to the module to indicate which tire is low. Different systems require different sensors.
I suggest that when you have them changed that you request the return of the previous ones. That's what I did although your odds of being ale to reuse them are likely better than mine.:)

Peter-
Thanks for the welcome & quick reply. I figured it had to be either missing or incompatible sensors, but I could not find this scenario on the www.
All that remains is figuring out the correct frequency of the truck.
Bit of a bummer, but the deal on the 17 wheels and the sale of the 14's was a wash, so not too painful.
Thanks again-

315 MHz. If you want to confirm, go to https://www.etis.ford.com/vehicleRe...id=982ECF1B42916883C12720908A5681FA.eccvas512 and plug in your VIN. Expand the list and it will list everything you have. It should show 315 MH in there.

Nice work, 315mhz it is. I reread your first reply. Yes, I will have the 2017 sensors given back to me to either try & recoup or just pay it forward as I wont need them.
Thanks again-
Doyle.

FWIW, the old sensors were perfectly capable of reporting tire pressure data, Ford never implemented it in the cluster. If you queried the BCM with Forscan, it would so report it.

2016 saw a good bit of electrical changes for the Explorer from what has been shared with me, frequency changes on TPMS were just one bit of the architecture that changed.

Happy motoring. :)

I just installed the winter tires from my previous 2013 Explorer onto my new 2017 Explorer and I also got the TPM system warning. The Ford dealer said in 2015 they changed the sensors to provide tire pressure info for each wheel and I would have to buy new sensors (@C$90) and swap them out. I'll wait til next spring when I have to remove the wheels anyway to put the summer tires back on.

Cost me $478 in total to have that work done.

Any opinions on where to buy the 4) new, 315mhz sensors? Consensus suggest OEM?
I see prices ranging from $35 ea from Rock Auto, to $50ish for all 4) on Ebay.
Any particular brand or vendors to stay away from? Looks like a potential crap-shoot.
TIA-
Doyle.

I just put 4 OEM sensors in a set of stock rims that we're using with winter tires. Did not want to mess with 3rd-party cheapies or the supposed "Genuine OEM" ones found on Amazon for $9 each. The Motorcraft TPMS12 315Mhz sensors are $48.79 each at Rock Auto. That was the cheapest I could find, and they are the real deal. All four were manufactured in October 2016, so they were fresh.

Nearly $200 is not cheap, but compared to dealer pricing it is not so bad. I have no experience with aftermarket sensors, but they may be perfectly adequate. The XLT is my wife's and I've decided to use only Ford-spec parts in it. The cost difference is worth it to me, for peace of mind.

Sorry to bring up this old thread. I'm trying to go the other way (2014 wheels on a 2018). Looks like I need new TPMS.
