2013 Ford Explorer Sport
We have a 2013 Explorer Sport which has been an outstanding vehicle! Yesterday we jumped in the explorer left the hotel we were staying in and jumped on the freeway to go eat. Immediately I know something was wrong, I noticed an extreme loss in power and an extremely loud turbo whine (which I've barely been able to here in the past). I plan to take it to the dealer tomorrow, but wanted to post here and see if anybody has any ideas as to what this might be. Normal driving does not produce these symptons, only when acclerating more than normal to get on the freeway. Any ideas? Thanks.

BTW our explorer has about 2200 miles on it.

Sorry I can't help but I'm sure some members will have an idea. It almost sound as though something might be slipping under pressure.

It would be very helpful in answering future questions/concerns if you entered your model and year in your profile and/or Vehicle Specs so that it will show in the left margin where your forum name appears. Some answers/problems are model specific.

Either the turbo itself is shot, or you've got a leak on the pressure side. Check around under the hood to see if you see any loose, split, or broken ducts leading from the turbo to the IC or back to the intake manifold. Since it's under warranty I would do very little trouble shooting and send it to the dealer though just so they don't say you messed with something.

Could have blown off a tube on the turbo.. If you're hearing the turbo and have loss of power, it is not seeing boost, a.k.a. you have a leak.. I would just look under the hood. and see if something came loose. I have had that happen on a couple of my turbo'd or and supercharged vehicles.

Same here.. I've had a boot blow off before because it wasn't clamped down tight enough.. Most likely what everyone has said.. boot or tube blew off somewhere or isn't sealed.

Good God, do not get on the gas too much until you get that checked out. You don't want to over rev that $$$ turbo !!!

To clarify, I was referring to my diesel truck, not the Ex. But it does happen.

Thanks for everybody's suggestions/help. I couldn't see anything under the hood that looks as if it had pulled loose, but I'm not much of a mechanic anyhow... I'll update here after I get it to the dealer and find out something.

Usually accelerate hard do you ?!? :)

Now you know how the non turbo'ed v6 performs !

it's not really THAT slow, it's just not as explosive compared to the kick in the pants you would normally get and what you are used to :)

only real danger is the heat from the recirculated exhaust coming into the engine compartment onto other engine parts not designed for that heat...

usually was a two minute fix with a screw driver on my tuned excursions , but we had a lot more engine bay room to get to the boot !

This happened to me about 500 miles in... the lower CAC tube's clamp wasn't tight from the factory, so the pressure eventually blew it off. Exact same symptoms you describe, it feels like you are driving a non-turbo explorer, and you can hear the turbo's as if they were inside the cab. Under idle and low rpm the turbo's don't spool, which is why you won't have the symptoms at that time.

Let me know how it goes at the dealership, giant22000. I can get your regional customer manager looped in so they can assist; send me a PM with your VIN, dealer, mileage, daytime phone number, and full name. I'll ensure you're contacted and this is promptly addressed.

This same situation you is describe was pretty popular topic on the F150 forums with the same 3.5L TT. Check out f150forums.com and search this. Hopefully its just a clamp and tube that came loose as 13 sport mentioned above.

You nailed. Not sure if it was this exact tube but the dealer just called and explained about some loose tubing. I know more when I pick it up.

Thanks for everybody's help.

Having read thesre posts, I hope that is the solution to the same problem I am having. Just dropped my 2013 Explorer Sport with 1500 miles to the dealer. Excessive engine noise and no power.

Keep us posted, sully2013. I'm also happy to get your regional customer service manager involved; just send me a PM with your VIN, dealer, mileage, daytime phone number, and full name. I'll do the rest!
