Two days ago the AC in my explorer stopped working. Air blows hard, but there is no perceptible cooling effect on it. Its hot out and that makes the wife grumpy.

First I checked that the serpentine belt was ok and it is, then I verified that the compressor clutch is engaging and it is. Then I checked the low side port and found the pressure is in the red on my cheap gauge. I don’t have a real manifold pressure gauge so I can’t get high side pressure. Also, as you can see in the picture, something melted in the compressor. I don’t know what it could be since the clutch still appears to work.

The clutch engages on and off when the AC button is pressed. No funny noises or anything.

The pressure shows red on my cheap gauge no matter whether the AC is running or not. Nothing moves the gauge.

All around the compressor pully and sprayed around the underside of the engine bay is what appears to be black melted plastic/rubber. i'm going to attempt to attach a picture.

Any ideas on how to fix? Is this common?

I had this same thing happen on July 3 this past Monday. I had to get a new compressor. I have 66000 miles. Wondering if this is common or defect in Ford Explorer
Any one else have this problem or reported it to Ford?

That looks kind of like what happens when the clutch hub goes. Maybe double check that before you go right to replacing the whole compressor/recharging the system.

My A/C just stopped working July 1st as well. No more cold air. Dealer claims a grommet is warped in the compressor and entire thing needs to be replaced. 65k miles

Did anyone repair themselves? how much did it cost for the repair?

This exact thing is happening in my 2016. What ended up happening?

This same this has happen two me twice on my 2013 ford explorer xlt. I am now on my 3rd compressor since buying the vehicle. Last compressor replaced just over 2 years ago. Have owned many vehicles over the years and can honestly say I've never had as many issues with a vehicle as this one. Complete piece of junk. I only keep it cause the vehicle is paid off. Never again will I buy a Ford.

I don't believe that going through that many compressors is normal. It appears that this isn't a common failure in the A/C system.
On another note, I usually buy the Ford ESP for 'just in case reasons'.

My AC sucks, as it took it 25 minutes the other day to bring the cabin temp to a reasonable 75. It's only blowing 52-54 from the center vents which is 10-15 degrees warmer than what it should be and they can't find out why. Tested a friend's '17 Explorer (95 degrees out) and it was 40 after 2 minutes. Maybe my compressor is on its way out and will look like this soon. It's going back in for the 4th time in a few weeks....lemon law?

To use the Lemon Law in Texas, the vehicle must still be under the manufacturer's original warranty.

That rubber piece is basically a hub separator. The one pictured in this thread definitely burned up and I imagine that didn't smell nice haha

It can be fixed here is a video

I'm also on the third compressor on my 2013 sport. It has been the least reliable vehicle that I have owned.

Haha, I dumped the 14 a year ago and got the '17. They could never find anything wrong and I hated that motor. The AC in the '17 has been much better.
