I have a 2014 Ford Explorer. I just took it to Ford to get the back hatch looked at. For the past month or two, it would never open for me. I always had to manually open it. They cleaned it and told me every time they tried it, it worked. I tried it twice before I left and it worked so I took it home. Went shopping the next day and I could not get it to open with the dash button or the button on the hatch. I manually opened it and then I used the button on the hatch to close it, and it didn't work. I went to multiple stores and I would say the buttons to open it worked maybe a 1/4 of the time. I took videos so I have proof that it doesn't work as I have had it at another shop previously and they to said that it worked as well. There must be something one could do so the buttons work everytime not just when or if they feel like working? Is there anyone that has an answer for this?

Welcome to the Forum. Will the liftgate close using the button on the dash? How about when you use the fob to open/close it?
I wonder if you could have a bad/intermittent ground issue.

The dash button and the fob only work maybe 1/4 of the time. It just seems to work every once in awhile.

It seems to not work way more than it does work. The fob rarely works to open the trunk. Like hardly ever will it open it.

Although it may not open, does it at least unlock every time?

When I am outside and I push the button to open it, I can hear clicking noises. The odd time it will unlock but not very often.

If it won't open or close intermittently then that should eliminate the locking mechanism. Have you tried the 'reset' procedure as outlined on page 85 of the Manual (3rd print)?

I have not tried a reset but I will and we'll see if that helps.

My trunk still will not open but it will close most of the times by pushing the button. When I try to open it, it still makes clicking noises but doesn't seem to unlock in order for it to open.

If it is not unlocking then perhaps then it could be the lock actuator or release switch. Also, the liftgate actuator motor may not be working correctly. Lift Gate for 2014 Ford Explorer | Auto Nation Ford White Bear Lake
Also, please check your messages. Please update your profile. I chose an XLT for the parts search since you haven't indicated the trim but I'm guessing they are the same for all.
