2014 Explorer XLT
Hey everyone, so I've got a 2014 XLT we bought new in March 2014. It's been the best vehicle we've ever owned with the exception of just a few minor things needing to be changed over the past couple years, so I really don't wanna get rid of it, but it now has almost 152,000 miles on it (with no water pump failure yet), so I'm thinking about maybe just having Ford put in a new engine (and possibly tranny), so I can get another 3 year warranty on it. Has anyone had this done? If so, do you know about how much it would cost?

New motor and tranny, what $10k or more!

My experience, and everything Ive seen here and other places, tells me that the engine in these cars is pretty good. I have 350,000 miles on my 2011 (new water pump went in at 200,000.) and as you say its been the best vehicle you have ever owned (me too)

Would the new warrantee cover anything other than the engine and transmission? If not, Id replace the water pump and keep driving what you have.
$8000 (he difference between $2000 for the water pump and $10000 for a new engine and transmission) will cover a lot of what could go wrong between now and $300000

FYI, other than routine stuff, I havent spent anything on the engine and transmission other than a preemptive replacement of the water pump, timing chain and oil pump ($2200)

If you are thinking of putting in a new engine, why not wait until the current one fails? There are many high mileage Explorers on this forum that have not undergone an engine change. The water pump and the PTU are the main items to keep an eye on.

Drive it to failure. Otherwise, you could drop 10k on parts and have it totalled a week later and lose all you put into it.

I agree with the others. A very expensive preventative engine/transmission replacement is a waste of money. The 3.5L engines are very durable if maintained properly. If I were you I would replace the water pump, oil pump, chains and guides as a preventative measure. Also, replace the PTU and transmission fluids every 30k-40k miles. If you have AWD then replace the rear differential fluid every 100k miles. Replace the coolant every 100k miles. It also wouldn't hurt to flush the brake fluid every 80k-100k miles. The maintenance I mention above is much less than replacing the engine and transmission and there is an excellent chance that doing this maintenance (with a preventative water pump replacement) will keep your vehicle's drive train reliable to 250k-300k miles, or more.

Dumb question, but what does PTU stand for? My brain is drawing a blank right now...

Power Transfer Unit

Ah. But that's only on the ecoboost all wheel drive right?
Every AWD model has a PTU whether it is an Ecoboost or naturally aspirated.

Why not put your money towards an extended warranty? For about 4k you could get 100,000 miles of pretty comprehensive coverage. Mine pays for maintenance too, 3 oil changes a year, and other stuff too. You could probably get a used motor for around 2K, but then have some risks...

Welcome to the Forum.
$4k! You can do much better than that. Have a look at this post, Ford ESP at dealer cost to forum members
$1390 for 100k miles, 9 years and 0% interest for 24 months.
