My wife’s explorer suddenly lost power while driving and I can not get it to fire back up. It cranks but won’t start. I couldn’t get it to start with starting fluid so I figured it was a spark issue. Scan tools not showing any codes and check engine light is not on. I replaced the crankshaft sensor but still nothing. It fired one time with the starting fluid after that but then it died and won’t start again. Anybody have any ideas?

Welcome to the Forum Justin.
Have you tried getting it boosted (jump start)? I wonder if there is an issue with the gas supply system? Fuel pump? I've never heard of someone using "starting fluid" with these vehicles.

Thanks for the reply. Yes I have tried jumping it. Don’t really think it’s a battery issue. I’ve always been told if it’ll run off starting fluid then you know it’s not a spark issue. But this one won’t start with so I was assuming a firing issue. I’m thinking maybe the camshaft sensor? But I could be way off. It makes no sense that it started one time last night and it’s not showing any codes

Can you confirm that the engine is receiving fuel? There are others that have had somewhat similar issues in trying to start. Do you have a keyed ignition or push button? Just sent you a PM regarding which trim you have.
There is a procedure to follow if the fuel shutoff switch was triggered. That switch should only be affected in the event of a crash but you never know. Confirming that there is a fuel supply would help and it may explain why the sudden engine stop while driving. Just one hurdle to get out of the way.

It’s a push button start (it’s flashing green, not sure if that’s normal). When I get home this afternoon I can see if there’s fuel at the rail. I appreciate your help.

Sounds like the starter fluid got sucked in , ignited and started the engine for short, but other than that it’s not getting enough fuel.

The reason I asked is that the procedure for resetting the fuel shut-off switch is different push-button vs keyed. Not saying that is your issue but just something to be aware of if it turns out to be a lack of fuel supply.

Check all the fuses under the hood?

You can use starting fluid on anything you have access to an intake opening. You really shouldn’t though, as it’s garbage, and most people try to get the motor to run long enough to “clear out” or “get going”.

Yep, checked the fuses. They all looked good.

Finally got around to checking and there is fuel pressure at the rail.

I would recheck fuses with a meter. Ive seen plenty that "looked good" that are bad they dont always have to blow in a big way.

My 2017 XLT has the same issue. Periodically it would turn over and run for a second or two and stall out. But once you started it a few times, it would stay running. One day it decided to never stay running. We had experience with a dying battery being the issue, so we came back with another car to jump it. The jump didnt take, and since then, it hasnt even started. It just turns over with no start. There is no fuel going to the fuel rails, voltage going to and from the fuel pump control module. Everything points to a fuel pump, but why a no start after a jump? what did the jump fry?

^^ Welcome to the Forum.
Boosting a car battery when there boosted car isn't getting gas would be the main reason it wouldn't run. Usually, if a car starts and then dies, it isn't a battery issue. Theoretically, once a car is running, you should be able to remove the battery and it will remain running since the alternator is supplying power. I don't think you fried anything, it looks like it could be a bad fuel pump all along. Unfortunayely, to check the fuel pump you would have to drop the fuel tank.

I bypassed the Fuel Pump Control Module today and got the car to start and run for a little bit. Ran like crap, but hopefully this new module fixes it.
