Year, Model & Trim Level
2000 Ford Explorer XLT
I'm about to buy a 2017 Ford Explorer, with 48000 miles on it for $17,000. My question is, is this vehicle worth it. It appears to have been well taken care of. I now have a 2000 Ford Explorer with the 5.0 engine and it's been a great car. But, she's getting long in the tooth, as well as my wife and I and I'm wanting a newer Explorer. I'm just wondering is this a good purchase or should I hold out and look for a better year? I can't afford a new one. Thanks.

Welcome to this forum! The year isn't as important as the over all condition of the vehicle. Some late models could have multiple issues from not being taken care of or from a previous accident. Have a mechanic (not the place it's being purchased) check it out. Scan the computer for codes.

Which trim are you looking at and which engine does it have?

Hello and thanks for getting back to me. It is just a standard Explorer with the 3.5L v6.

That would include the Base, XLT and Limited. Which is the one you're looking at?
One of the issues with the 5th gen Explorer (3,5L V6) is the internal water pump. If that goes and you don't catch it in time, it could ruin the engine by leaking coolant into it.
I would advise getting an extended Ford warranty.

Thank you for the heads up. I just bought it. It has 48k on her. It is the 3.5 v6. So I will take into consideration about the water pump problem and maybe getting the ford x-tended warranty. Thanks.
