ok, quick story, as far as i can tell: wife checked the transmission fluid and didn't seat it all the way, after going through some bragg, mud holes it started slipping, changed the filter and removed a vast quanity of water, trany still slipped in 1st and 2nd, took it to the dealer, they said "it will take about 2300 in parts to fix it" <- are they for real? a new rebuilt transmission is cheap than that aint it?

for a 2000 XLS 2wd or 4wd? 4.0L SOHC or V8?

Details!

Dropping the pan will only change 4 quarts +/- of fluid, there are still about 3-4 more quarts in there.

WAter = #1 tranny killer right after heat

4wd 4.o sohc, and i got almost 2 to 2 1/4 gals out of the trany without doing a flush on it

Right but you must understand that the torque converter and cooling system are still full! So is the filter and valve body, pump, and other internals of the trans.

$2300 is about right for a Dealer to fix a late model trans!
Have you gotten a second opinion?

Is the truck dead now? or still driving and slipping?

I cant imagine that much water could get down the dipstick tube??!!!

well, no second opinion, just got off the phone with the deal, warenty covers it, "he thinks". and i was out in the puddles and rain for like 4 or 5 hours, some were kind deep. and your i did forget about the torque converter, and the cooler at that. oh well hope its covered

oh yea, its dead, no driving possible, it died on the dealship when they took it for a test drive

hahaha Just dont tell them WHY it has water in it, the less info you give them the better!!

well since i brought it from them, like 4 months, i aint saying a word.. i made sure it was nice and clean before taking it in.

Wait till they open up the valve body and find water in there..or did you clean it too. Try flushing it with about 15 quarts of Trans fluid if you haven't done so already, it can't hurt. Hey it may even solve your problem.

Right! You might get away with a backflush. Many quick e lube places can do this for about $80. Make sure you watch them though, you can actually watch the exchanger flush out the old stuff and they should run it until you see clean ATF in the exchanger window.

Once water gets in a trannie it's toast. The clutch plate frictions will absorb water I am told as will the frictions on the bands and in the TC. FULL teardown.

yea its toaste, no hope for it, i think the dealer will be replacing it instead of rebuilding it, i dont care as long as its cover by the warrenty

well that sux about the tranny

how big were the mudholes?

zhanx......"4wd 4.o sohc, and i got almost 2 to 2 1/4 gals out of the trany without doing a flush on it."

Think we'd all like to hear how you do that. Climb up a really big ramp?

Didn't seat it properly????

Are we talking about the dip stick?

I can't imagine a ton of water coming in thru the dip stick tube. It's more likely that you were in some deep puddles and sucked up water thru the tranny breather tube.......I don't think you can blame the wife for this one.

And I too would like to know how you got 2-2 1/4 gallons out of a pan drop.?????

i thought the tranny breather was in a positive pressure, guess i was wrong, i use ramps at the welding shop where my wife works, i was a little scare to drive on them, they are high enough were the back bumper almost touches, if i hadn't seen large stuff on them i would have stay off, btw the, dealship will be done with it on monday, i hope, new transmission.

My new trans from ford installed was $2300. Replased mine in december

Phoneix will have rebuilt unit for about $1000 shipped - check eBay or Phoneix Hard Parts on a web search. I'm running one of their 5R5E's in my 97. Works good.

do u have to pay shipping on the thrashed tranny?

Their trannys sell for around $750 on eBay - the balance is for two-way shipping (mine was to Louisville). They give you a truck shipping reciept and you send back the core. There's also a core charge, but you get that back within 30 days of their receipt of the core as long as it doesn't have a cracked case.
