'96 Sport 4x4
Hello. I just bought a '96 4x4 explorer sport five months ago. My trans. went out a week ago, and the trans. shop said it would be 2900 bucks to rebuildmy transmission! Does this sound right? to me it sounds way too high! I would like some advice on whether or not this sounds right...Thanks

Sounds pretty high to me.

Sounds anywhere from $400-$700 too high.

I just had a rebuild done a month ago on my 96. $1500.

Now that is cheap, makes me think they did not do a complete rebuild. I have had three done, all from different places, and they have all been over 2k.

that sounds more like it...
this guy is tryin to take me for a little ride im thinkin. he told me he was going to use some of the parts that werent scrap... sounds like a partial to me

Just a thought... Maybe the reason we hear of many rebuilt trannys only lasting 20-50K is that they were partial rebuilds... Replace everything while its on the bench...

just got off the phone with the guy... parts$1400 labor$1480. he said it would be a full rebuild including shift silinoids, torque conv. o rings etc.

what kind of a warrenty?

Still sound high. You can have them rebuilt around here for about $2100 witha 2 yr/24mo warranty.

Is that for an A4LD or the 4r55e? For the 2nd gens, thats a pretty good deal too. Usually its about $2400 or so with a 12 or 18 month warrenty.

Get a transmission from Jasper - they are the same price and warrantied for 3 years I believe.

they are the same price...but you still have to install them.

Get a complete parts list from him - $1400 sounds awfully high. I'd like to know what he is going to replace....if he can quote you parts, he must have a list.

Definitely High!

I had mine rebuilt for $1600 in april...cost $275 for them to remove & inspect and another $1325 to rebuild. Mine came with a 6mo/6000mi warranty. Could have gotten 1yr if i had it towed elsewhere but decided not to go that route.

I only paid a 1000 for my rebuild :D ...but guess what it drives like ****

The Jasper tranny warranty sucks. I heard after one year the only things waranteed are some seals or something. That doesn't sound bad IMO for a complete rebuild. People here get partial rebuilds for around half that and end up going back usually before the end of the year.

Mine was a full rebuild with a one year/unlimited mileage warranty.

I paid $ 2700 for a whole new trans from Ford. I was told from Ford don't do a rebild because I would be back in a year. Also came with 3 year-36,000 war.

This was a year ago

Thats probably the route I'm going to take.... was $2700 the entire cost or just for the tranny?
