1997 ranger 4.0 auto 4x4,park works, reverse light come on in reverse, reverse is like neutral, put into drive and it acts like second, but if you put into 2nd manually it will go abit faster, but not if you start out in manual 2nd, tops out at about 38 mph 6000 rpm, let off the gas and it coast with idle rpms. any help would be awsome.

so what Im trying to say is, put into drive and tops out at 20 mph, put into 2nd manual, it tops out near 40, but feels like the same gear starting off. 1st manual does the same as drive, 3rd stays like 2nd. I have read many threads close to my problem, and am going to check the transfer case shift fork, were to go from there I don't know, thanks for any help in advanced

Does anyone know an easy way to check the shifter fork
N the transfer case

Does the OD light flash on and off? Is there a DTC code stored?

Yes its blinking can I go to auto zone to scan them, is the truck in limp mode?

Not sure about 97 but when you restart the OD light should stop blinking till you select a gear that doesn't work , yes it is in limp mode when the OD light is flashing. Yes, some Auto Zones can read trans codes but some can only read engine codes.

local zone does not read trans codes, anywere else I can get these checked...I know the dealer does, but they told me $175'ish, hell I could almost buy a used tranny for that!

You will have to check other local auto parts or repair shops? You could also buy a code reader for less. There are many things that could cause your problem, having the code or codes will help point you in the right direction. Your probably only getting 1st gear in drive, manual 2nd is actually 3 gear, leave it to ford to confuse people. The speeds don't seem high enough, your transfer case may be in low also.

I there anyone in the Birmingham area that has a reader I can borrow?

do they check tranny codes at obd 2 location?
