2nd row console

The 2nd row console came preinstalled in our 2018 Platinum. There are two things about that console that bother me. First, it is huge but there is so much space wasted which could be used to store things.
And then it makes the access to the 3rd difficult, especially with children’s seats on the second row seats that wont fold.
I have ideas for both issues and I will post pictures of the work.

Welcome to the Forum Matt.
Chances are that once you remove the console you will find that a piece of carpeting is missing. That is what others have found. You will likely also find the floor mounting bracket.

Hi Peter

Yes I was aware of the fact that there is no carpet underneath the console.

Missing patch of carpet:

Mounting bracket:

The interesting thing is the fore part:

It is a big unused compartment, which is empty but there are some unused mounting points. This tells me that something was meant to be in there. Perhaps the inner structure of it is used for other car models. There is also a plastic tube leading from the bottom into the hidden compartment, which could be for power? I thought of a refrigerated bin and searched for this on google with "fridge console Ford Explorer" but nothing came up.
Perhaps someone knows more about this?

I haven't decided yet how to make the empty space useable. First I want to be able to "flip" the console to ease the access to third row.

The Flex has a refrigerated 'console' that may fit. ford flex refrigerated console - Google Search

Peter

The seats of the Flex fit, console should be good to go. I wonder how much work it would be to retrofit a fridge into the existing console.
