2nd to 3rd Slip - Sometimes.....

I think you can tell with the TSB, but I think bonded plates came into play in 98 or so. I am unclear as to why the 4r55 used a different EPC.

Tom... one thing you might want to consider, since the EPC can be added without dropping the VB is NOT to replace the EPC this go around, and see if the rest of the things fix the problem. If they do you saved yourself $250. 75,000 miles is low miles for EPC failure.

I'd put in a drain plug if you choose this path so you can do a less messy job if you need to go back in.

i have an extra epc and shift solenoids from my vb when i messed it up there just sitting in the garage i would be willing to give you the epc its not new but it ohms out ok. that is if you have not already bought a new one ? also if you think you need shift solenoids i have those as well.
thanks brad

That is a kind offer Tom. He could swap between your old one and his old one and see if there was any difference. I am doubtful his 75K EPC is necessarily the problem.

I hadn't done anything as I was totally surprised when it wouldn't go! I have a drain plug and i change the oil every other engine oil change. when i pulled the filter off and saw that it was dirty inside, I was very surprised! I haven't tried any thing else yet. Hopeing for a simple cure since there had been no trouble until it would barely move

Doug... start a new thread and let's start over on your problem, which is something different. I think I may have some ideas for you but don't want to hijack this thread. Once you have started the new thread I will delete those here so this thread stays related to the issue at hand. Thanks!

And, a fellow Sacramentan !

I was looking in my ATSG manual (page 29) on the 5R55E, and I came across information on the new EPC, and TCC solenoids.
EPC F77Z-7G383-AA
TCC F77Z-7G136-AA
The book states that these 2 parts have a new design that incorporate something called Inductive Signature (ISIG) for diagnosis. This is the reason why they are not interchangeable with the previous models.

Glacier - I hear ya. But at this point the guy at fordparts.com has gone out of his way to help me and I am going to go ahead and get the correct part. Hate to see a good deed punished....

Brad - Thanks a bunch, buddy. I'm going to go ahead and get a new EPC but I sure appreciate the generous offer!

On the drain plug (this will show how much more I have to learn), hypothetically, if I do this and somehow manage to lose the trans fluid, what will happen? Will I be able to sense that something is wrong before I burn up the transmission? It's not that I'm totally incompetent with a wrench, I just want to understand what could happen.

I have started driving the Explorer every day and doing it with the radio off (surprisingly difficult). I'm trying to get a feel for what's the longest it ever goes without slipping so I'll know when and if to declare the project a success.

A sincere thanks to everyone for the help! I am going ahead with this project but am expecting to be on crutches for a week or so beginning tomorrow. That will delay the actual work because my car is a 5 speed and I'm not touching that trans. until I can drive the car again!

Tom

on the drain plug ,they sell drain plug kits for tranny pans at like auto zone, oreillys, etc i have a 4x4 pan and i drilled the whole right in the center of the lowest part of the pan, ok if you dont plan on four wheeling but you should be ok to install it where you would like, preferably at the lowest point so you can get a good drain. when you install you might even use some sealant around the washers(i did not) and mine is fine so far.

I have the same problem with my '98XLT 4.0 SOHC 4x4

I have about 110,000 miles on it without a single problem. I am occasionally getting the 2-3 slip under part throttle conditions. It is very intermittent. I can go for days without it happening, but then when it does it will do it consistently until I shut the car off and let it sit for a while. I have replaced the fluid and the filter hoping that would fix it, but it didn't. I am hoping your efforts will lead me to a solution that doesn't involve a rebuild.

I hve gone to ford, and they tell me it is prob. internal seal/gaskets. Also could be govenor. recommend overhaul with this many miles (165,000) Yesturday a.m. it shifted ok when started up cold.
