I've run across a rebuilt M5OD-R1, for 150 bucks, and it's not too far away. The only problem is that it's a 2wd tranny. Does anyone know if I can simply unbolt my extension housing from my 4x4 5spd and bolt it up to the 2wd 5spd? Anything else involved with doing that? Or am I being way too optimistic and there is no way to make my t-case bolt up to that thing?

Man, that isn't the news I wanted to hear... :(

Anyone else know?

I dont see why it wont work. therangerstation.com has some really good information on manual transmissions that will bolt up to our applications. You may need to make some modification to the transmission, but for $150 and being out of the vehicle shouldn't be a big deal.

I'll look on there some more, but when I looked at school, I didn't seem to find any info on whether or not a 2wd would work using the extension housing from the 4x4 transmission.

Well, just talked to a buddy of mine who gave me the number to a transmission shop. They said it wouldn't work because the shaft itself is a totally different length = the transmission would have to be opened up again anyways. So I guess I'll just get a 4x4 rebuilt one on ebay when mine craps out. BTW, the one I was looking at was on ebay as well and it's a 150 buy it now...just in case any 2wd's here need a 5spd. I wish I knew more....I simply have no experience with manuals. The fact the automatic uses two different output shafts for 4X4 and 2X4 maybe should be a clue I guess....

2wd tailhousings from what I have seen are about twice as long as 4x4 tailhousings. For both auto's and manuals.
The 2wd 5 speed uses a slip yoke in the back to connect to the driveshaft.
that right there hints very strongly that the two trans are built with different output shafts. You could likely park the two units next to each other and do a soft rebuild/conversion yourself.

I've had just about as good of luck with rebuilt 5 speeds as I have with rebuilt auto's.

rebuilt = scares me. So I really gotta trust the tech or do it myself

It needs two parts to make it work. The Tail shaft and the Tail housing. I converted a 2wd trans to 4x4 once on my 5-speed Navajo. Its very possible but it not just a tailhousing as the Spline count is different on the Tail shaft.

Guys, read post 6, I figured that part out. ;) I'd need a new tranny anyways, because the one I have has chewed up gears (drives fine, just whines). The cost of all the gears, rebuild kit, etc + labor for someone to rebuild it is even more than a rebuilt one.

My co-worker's dad works for a transmission shop and often rebuilds transmissions on the side. He's gonna ask his dad for me, how much he'd want to put my output/tail shaft and extension/tail housing on the 2wd transmission since they'd both be out of the vehicles. If he gives me a decent price, I'll probably buy that transmission and have him convert it.

When I did it the Transmission guy swapped my parts in to my Transmission for $100

AWESOME! I can hopefully get a price around that! Thanks Kris

5 speeds are not that complicated to assemble from what I understand about them
I think you could do this yourself, for free (just new hard parts)
