im confused if mine is 2wd or AWD....never really thought about asking when i bought it and i also wanted to know............if under the hood i am running a 4.0L SOHC would that make it 4WD? but i dont have the switch between 2wd and 4wd so i am assuming it is AWD. let me know thank you......

any opinions are welcomed...

if u have a sohc and dont have the switch.. i would assume u have a 2x4. the awd only comes with v8s if im correct

Yeah you have a 2 wheel drive. Like JSSong said only the v-8's came with the all wheel drive.

I have a v6, I have the switch, it says AWD,4HI and 4LO.

I'm with sideswipe... I've got a '97 EB 4.0 SOHC with switch choices: Auto, 4 Hi and 4 Lo. From my understanding Auto = AWD. Technically I think its something like a 60 / 40 power split Rear / Front under normal driving conditions.

(Sometimes I wish I could make mine good ole traditional 2wd so I could kick the a$$ end around for more fun...)

Why do people alwayz call 4 AUTO - AWD? I'm just amateur but AWD is a totally different system than 4 Auto. When I think of 4 AUTO I think of "Ford, you are stupid" and when I think of AWD I think of "Wow, V8 AWD Kick A$$". When offroading I would rather have AWD than 4 AUTO engage, different power management.

Yeah, looks like I spoke too soon... I just read some posts and have learned that Auto does NOT = AWD. I read something like AWD always has at least 30% power going to the front and Auto only sends power to the front when the rear slips. (Can someone with more knowledge verify this?)

I also definitely agree that I'd rather have AWD than Auto when off-roading, but I'd still rather have my choice of 4Hi or 4Lo than AWD...

I would like to have just 2WD, but I will put in a switch to fix that thanks to jot017.....

4 auto is a torque on demand system that works just like AWD. In off roading AWD isn't all that great, and is not match for full time 4 wheel, or 4 lo. AWD isn't usually desired for wheeling.

AWD sends 30% power front & 70% power rear under normal conditions. The power gets moved around as needed. The 4x4 Auto puts 4% power to the front and 96% power to the rear under normal conditions. When the rear tires slip, power is diverted to the front until both ends are spinning at the same speed. Basically when driving AWD on sand it feels like there is no slip or lag getting moving. On my 4x4 Auto there is a slight lag before my Explorer starts moving in the sand. When in High there is no lag. When I had my Explorer up on jackstands and idleing in Auto, my rear tires only had to turn 1/6 of a revolution before my front tires started moving. My 4x4 Auto works quite well and for the very slight trade-off to AWD, I would take the Auto mode any day to get the locking High and Low ranges that the AWD mode doesn't offer.
