hey all!! ummmmm 3.73 gears.......... i want to put 35's and it looks like everyone around here with 35's have like 4.10 atleast. can i put 35's with out a problem or will i endup wearing something out or breaking it. i do alot of driving to work and also take it on the trail with the 31's it has. i dont want to break something and make it more spendy then just doing it at first.:D

You mean at least 4.56. 4.10s are more suited for 31's and maybe even 33's depending on what your looking for. A 4.56 gear ratio will put your performance back where it was when you had stock tires. 4.88s will be a little better if you go off-highway often and want a little more oomph.

i guess what my question is will i wear out my stuff and break things if i keep my 3.73's and 35's? or will it work?

You'll kill your auto trans!

my truck went from stock 3.27's to 3.73's, and I had 2 sets of tires for it, the mud terrain 31" and 33" swampers for offroad time. If I could do it again, I'd have gone with 4.56 gears without a question, and just gotten rid of the 31" tires. Don't do 35" with 4.10's, that will be incredibly hard on the automatic. I had a standard tranny so I didn't worry.

I'd go for 4.88s or 5.13s with 35s.

X2 the auto tranny wont stand a chance. I had 35's and 3.73's for awhile as a daily driver and killed a brand new clutch in 3months and broke second gear(manual trans).
The auto trans has a hard time standing up to 31's and off-roading so 35's will surely be its demise.

could i do 33's with my 3.73?

The 3.73's go well with stock 29" tires.

To get that stock gearing(3.73 is the best all around with stock tire, ratio) performance, Divide your tire diameter by 29, then multiply by 3.73

35/29*3.73 = 4.5, so go with at least a 4.56 with the 35" tires.

3.73 WILL turn the 33's.you lose mph,and get up and go(gusto).
but you will have more wear and tear.4.10 are very good for 33.I dont remember who,but i think 410fortune runs 35's with 4.10's on his b2.His axles are the same as our's.he swapped the X axle's under the b2.But mathamaticly 4.56 are the best over all route.

And he has a V8...
For 33s, 4.56, for 35s I still say 4.88 or 5.13.

on the ranger(alot lighter than a x) i had 36"x12 tsl's on my stock 3.73's gear and the axle shaft chipped bad when the hub crumbled.the clutch burned up twice in 6 months aventully the frame was shot out so i parted it out.

ne ways he use's this truck mainly to go to work...so a taller gear than say 4.10's, would mean less performance.4.88 wouldnt be to bad because of the grunt offroad but the pavemnet wil eat tires.with our young ever so heavy feet, the mpg will suffer!

At 70 MPH with 4.88s and 35s you'll be turning 2600 RPMs, which is a bit high for a 4.0 but not bad, you'll likely get less millage by running too high of gears and lugging too much. As far as burning the tires off, that sounds like a personal problem to me.

alot of you went off of what i ended up asking. can i rin 33's with 3.73's without damage??

Yes. Your transmission will not like it one bit and it would suck to drive. To each their own.

Basically any tire considerably bigger than stock will cause more wear on your drivetrain.
33's not as much as 35's but 33's are still about 4in bigger than stock and considerably heavier. Some people run 33's on stock gears with no problems but if your tranny has alot of miles and is on its last leg than 33's are of course gonna cause damage.

If you do go with 33's then you can maybe find some factory 4.10 gears axles in a junkyard for cheap and throw them under there.

For what it matters, I have a ranger, with a 4L SOHC v6, and I am running 3.55 gears with 30's, and I still have enough power that if I rev up to 3000 RPM my tires break traction from a stop. Tells me my truck is happy with that.

Plus my highway fuel milage just got up to 22MPG.

oh and another thing why would i make a trail/daily driver rig out of something with a bad or worn tranny :)

hell no!!! my transmission is in great shape and have never had a problem!! and all the last people that had it used it for was family car to get to work and back and maybe on a vacation or 2!!!

The A4LD is a weak transmission, originating from a 3500 pound 4 cylinder car. Don't over estimate it, I would use as much gear as possible.

i had intentions of reading this entrie thread but everyones saying the same thing!.. i did a lot of research befor finally gettin my gears talking to a few experts and much reading on the forum. in the end i decided 4.56s with my 130k 4.0 OHV was the best bet. w/ a few mods liek cold air, and TB spacer ol' Dora drives great. there is not too much wear on any of the drivetrain on highway, city, country, and offroad. however i am not satisfied w/ "performance" for the simple sake of bein able to spin the tires a lil bit or to get up and go from a stoplight i wish i would have gone w/ 4.88s!

if that is not a large factor for you then you will be satisfied w/ 4.56. my 2 cents these days is better to be overgeared than under, you can always just go w/ bigger rubber to catchup to the gearing.

and thats what i got to say

(i think a v8 will pick up the slack i left w/ 4.56) ;-)
