Has anyone tried to change from one type of 4405 to another.... I need a transfercase, and when I look up the tag number on mine 4405-10 f87a-ca it tells me it was only manufactured in 98 and 99, and any junk yards want $500 for these things.

They tell me there are 3 different types of transfer case in this year of explorer.

So here is my question, how hard is it to change from one type to another?

will I have to change the switch in the dash as well as the little computer board controller and the motor on the back of the case?

if it is possible am I gonna get strange engine lights? will the speedo still work? how about drivelines, are they the same length/style/bolt pattern?

any help is greatly appreciated....:roll::thumbdwn:

There are three types, and they're not interchangable. THey can be hybridized, mixing and matching parts to make some pieces from earlier ones fit into the later ones, but a as whole, there are three cases, easily identified on-sight:

95-96: U-joint front output, rear shaft speed sensor.
97: CV-joint front output, rear shaft speed sensor.
98-01: CV joint front output, NO rear shaft speed sensor.

Simple enough?
