Hi all,

I will be getting 31 on my x this weekend. I haven't really looked so I though I'd ask you all.
Can I put a 31x10.5x15 tire on the spare rim that came with the truck? It orginally had 235/75/15 on them.

Thanks!

Happy 4th God Bless us now and forever!!!

Yep, you sure can. I may not fit in the orginal place though, some can get it to fit some can't, i guess it depends if you have a hitch or not.

Happy trails!!

and what type of hitch it is too.... but it will fit deflated partially...just be sure to have one of those portable compressors with you and you should be ok

Thanks for the replys guys.

Next ? If I can't fit it under the truck? Where are other options? I used the back cargo area alot for my Elkhounds. so that would be no good.

Would it be okay to set on top on roof rack? or would that be tooo much weight? Or how jeeps have it on the back door held to bumber somehow?

You could get a rear tire carrier, they are expensive. I'm getting one made in a couple of month. I also have a safari rack on the top of my truck. That's where i through my spare when i go wheeling. Some people just put it up there with no rack and let it rest on those plastic strips up there and then just tie it down to the factory rack. Do a search for rear tire carrier, you might find something you really like.

Happy trails!!

Thanks for info.

I did a search before I started this and I only came up with people putting in there cargo area, or buying the $300 plus tire carriers.

I mean how safe would it to put on the factory roof rack and tying it down? how much does a 31 tire weight? I guess I could have it up there with not all the air in the tire. and if needed use my compressor to get it up .....

I know at our house I got up on my explorer to get on the roof(no ladder, but lifter x) and I was standing on the back roof rack by the mounts and I dint dint it and I'm 215lbs.....

Oh it will hold a lot more weight then a 31" tire. I would just lay it on the roof, between the roof rack cross members and then strap it do. A 31" weights less then a 100lbs, you'll be in good shape!

Happy trails!!

You should be able to fit it under without a Hitch I am sure. With a Hidden hitch mine fits fine. I just have to put the forward part in first.

Your Tire will fit fine up top. I ran my second spare there before my Roof Rack. Now I bought a Spare tire holder fits into my hitch. If I go 4Wheeling then I'm not taking my trailer. When I go playing in the Desert I always bring 2 Spares. Take a look at my Meet Trinity below for the Holder.

couldnt we just air it down to make it fit with a hitch down there?

Mine fits and I have hitch.

'98 and up Explorers will have a lot easier time getting a 31" spare underneith with a hitch. When Ford redesigned the rear in '98 they gave some more room, enough to install a 255 70R16 tire. With my Hidden Hitch installed on my '97, I couldn't get my 265 75R16 tire up there even after I let all but 10 PSI out of it. I had to take a BFG and hammer the metal plate by the rear differential just to cram a 30x9.5" tire up there. It is wedged tightly between the metal plate and my hitch and takes finess to get it up there.
