Is it possible to achieve 350 or more Horsepower with a 97 4.0 Sohc? What kind of mods do u need to achieve it?

prob not.. whenever the EE charger comes out, you can bolt that on.. but that wont put you at 350.

So even even exhaust, headers, cold air intake, chips and all that other mods on it still wouldnt reach it?

Possible? Yes.

Practical? Nope.

By the time you get up in those numbers you could have purchased a 347 Motorsport engine and converted the truck over......

It would require:
Supercharger
Custom pistons, rods, camshaft, heads, exhaust, intakes, fuel injection, ignition, transmission, etc etc etc....

250 HP is much more attainable with a OHV and even that is gonna cost you........

swap in a 347, supercharge, and you should be about there.

i would say probley not with a v-6......it could be done but the engine would not be a practical engine, meaning it wouldnt be one could be driven every day reliably, on the other hand a v-8 , wouldnt have a problem at all with those numbers even w/out supercharging it.....just takes the right part matching and money.....there is no substitute for cubic inches....exept cubic money.....so dollar for dollar you would be better off with a small block and a few dollars.....that will get ya were you need to be or want to be....good luck....

any good links out there (besides here of course) to help newbies Xplore this possibility a little more?...

many thanks :D

Actually the best place is in a book.....

It's called

"How to build and modify Ford 60 degree V-6 Engine's"
written by Sven Pruett of Vanir technologies. Considered to be the guru of this class of engines.

If anybody has hit 350 HP with a OHV it's him.

Also check out Rangerpowersport.com and talk to Doug904............he does performance 4.0L stuff.....

HOWEVER like stated above, 350 HP is really out of reach.......
because of the amount of $$$$ and sacrifice driveability it would take to get there...........

Probably be cheaper, and far better, to just drop in an Aviator engine. 400hp is well within reach with a blown 2v 4.6L.

Yep but in the 1-2nd gen, it's much easier to fit a 5.0 if not a 351 over a 4.6... 4.6's are alot taller and wider... 5.0 has more parts available and can be built for power for less than a 4.6 from all I've seen and read.

Also more have done the 5.0 swap making information easier to get, and more knowledge b/c it's been done so many times
4.6 DOHC vs 5.0

I would like to have the 4.6 in my truck! But I think I will go with the Explorer Express S/C! That should put my 4.0 SOHC arround 300+ with my other mods.

What's the stock Horsepower on a 96 OHV 4.0 ?? (4dr 4x4 XLT) I'm seeing lots of links for add-ons but nothing that comes out and says it. It's prob in my manual which is outside, and/or elsewhere but figured someone could tell me off the top of their head and save me a few gray hairs looking. :D

I'm trying to beef up mine and am curious as to where it's starting... 165hp?
So with the (Filter + apten + performance plugs) - (BFG AT KOs., some torque bog), I'm lucky to be running ~180?
I'd love to hear some advice on recc'd upgrades from anyone else with a similar setup.
Thanks in advance.

He was asking about an SOHC motor.

It seems like it would be possible to build up a motor to work with the supercharger that would put out 350+H.P. I have heard of some hot SOHC engine build ups. The proper build would allow you to run higher boost levels. Add 30 psi injectors, 80mm Mass Air Sensor and a lightning fuel pump and your gettin there. The flip side is $$$. The parts for the build up could be $2500 + (forged pistons etc). Not to mention labor & machine shop work (high quality balancing required). Say you are into spending $6k on this project, you would have to start budgeting for a trany build up. We figure that your stock transmission would only be good for about 300 H.P. We have learned from the V8 guys who have tweaked their 5.0 equiped with our X-Charger, the stock trans is a weak link on a modified explorer.

You may consider waiting for Matt (Black Magic) to have his X-Charger installed on his V6 SOHC. His will be tweeked for max power with street reliability. He will blow off stock 5.0's but will run smooth and sweet.

In the mean time, you can start with a nice intake and exhaust upgrade. Why not throw on one of our sway bars for improved handling!

Nice pics. Yes I am sure it would be easier to fit a 5.0 in there, and probably cheaper. But just remember: modular>pushrod and the Aviator has one nice mod motor in it.

It is possible. If I wanted to, I could have 350 hp from my OHV, as I have close to 300 already. With proper parts and tuning 350 with the SOHC should be possible.

However, you'd have a hard time finding a tranny to hold that power, that is the weak part of our drivetrains and tranny choices. Also, the SOHC timing system might not be able to handle that power reliably.

sunbum--

93-01 4.0 OHV stock horsepower is 165 hp on the engine

91-92 4.0 OHV stock horsepower is 160 hp on the engine

Without dynoing I can't guess as to what you would get with chip, exhaust, maf, tb, etc. etc. but 180 is probably a good estimate. I'll probably have mine dynoed soon when I get my chip so I'll know then.

What is stock HP on a 2000 SOHC?
