i read someone on here was running that with a 5spd trans. it moved

Why you would want to is beyond me, but of course it will move.

I got 3.27s and 35s  It actually does move, I don't know why other people have so many troubles with it. My 0-60 time (actually 0-52 on my speedometer) is about 14 seconds. Only about 2 seconds over stock if I'm not mistaken. No it's not a race car, no it can't do burnouts, hell I doubt it could even chirp them around a corner.

Right now I have 3.73's on my 8.8 and D35. Dont have the funds to replace both just yet. I do know that I want 35's and dont want to waste money on 33's first. I figured I could wheel like that for a while.

You can do it, but if you have an auto trans, it will put a lot of stress on it.

I do have an auto trans, A4LD which I have read is junk anyway. I have plans for a 302 swap also so the trans can go for all I care.
Just curious, why are autos weaker then manuals? Cant you just pop in into 1st or 2nd while in 4hi or 4lo? You dont really shift the manual out of 1st or 2nd do you?

Its not that "autos" are weaker than manuals.. Its that the a4ld is a weak trans.. It started out as a c3 behind the pinto.. then got a 4th gear and a electronic converter lockup.. It should never have been put behind a 4000lb explorer..

<snip>..
The French-built C-3 was first used in 1974 in the Ford Pinto and remained until the Merkur XR4TI was dropped in 1989.
<snip>..
The A4LD four speed overdrive transmission was introduced in the 1985 Bronco II/Ranger and saw use behind many 4 and 6 cylinder engines until the 1995 model year when it was replaced by the 4R44E and 4R55E electronic transmissions. The A4LD was the first Ford transmission to use an EEC-controlled torque converter lock-up clutch and later became the first to use electronic shift control (via a 3-4 shift solenoid). The French-built A4LD was created by adding overdrive to the front of the C-3 three-speed unit.

cybergasm is running 3.73 with 35's and the a4ld tranny

You could do it. I'd just recommend as soon as you turn off the road to go wheeling, put it in low range and don't take it out till you're ready to head home. I've got manual hubs, so I've been running it in low range with the hubs unlocked on trails, then locking hubs when needed.

yes, use low range whenever your offroad with gearing like that.

here's cybergasm's truck. 3.73 with 35" tires

IMO,,,I say save up your money a little longer and do it right. You don't want to buy new tires and have to rebuild your transmission a few months later.

I had 35"s and 3.73s and you will be OK on the street if you take it easy.

even in low range with stock gears and 35s your clutch wont last more than a couple of minutes off road. I ran mine like that for a couple of months and didnt have any major problems. taking off from a slight incline can be a huge problem. 'will have to put it in 4 low' quite hilarious and embarrasing. I just had 4.56s put in at a 4wheel parts store for 1080.00. just wait untill they have there half off install deal going they usually do every other month or so.

Yup like R.J. said i am still running 35's with 3.73's and not too bad. I can still run 65+ on the freeway and what not, just the passing power is alittle lacking on the freeway.

And yes off-road i have to have the transfercase is low all the time otherwise it would not go uphill very well. (or not at all) when it's in high range.

haha oh boy, im running 35s with 3:27 and its a pretty good time, never see 5th thats forsure, i have the manual trans but its really not all that bad, its very hard on youre clutch forsure, but for offroading you just use low range and its fine.I would love to regear and have plans to I just cant afford it.
