Anybody have any idea why my Ex runs between 2,900 & 3,000 rpm at 70 mph.(yes its in overdrive)
It wasn't like this a week ago, but now it screams on the freeway. I just wonder if after 193,000 miles, my A4LD is going. Oh ya, also in the morning I have to shift form 1st to 2nd manually. After that first shift it works just fine. Also the fluid is clean and full.

You could also be lacking TCC lockup... may be a TCC solenoid issue, or other valve body related.

torque converter is not locking up....1st to 2nd could be a result of tc not behaving (not creating the pressure to engage second).

Torque Converter....same problem in my 97.

In addition to the question of the TCC locking up, is it getting into 4th gear?

Doesn't sound like it, even at 80-85 mph my X runs about 2700-2800 RPM.
Edit: this is a 4x4 with 3.73 ;)

I belive my does 2600 or 2700 but that is with 3.73's and 33" tires  after it kicks out of over drive (hills) it's at 3 grand!

it is in 4th gear, it just seems to be running a lot higher RPM's than usual. It's also not as responsive as it used to be. It's never had a hint of tranny problems since new, but consdering the milage, maybe a new one is in order.

I had almost exactly the same symptoms you describe. You can read about it and what I did under this forum in Valve Body Rebuild Journal - Disassembly and Valve Body Rebuild Journal - Reassembly.

If you are handy & want to tackle it or if you can find a good shop that would rebuild just the valve body, you might save the transmission.

Good luck!
