3rd brakelight on 97

is this a brake lite or reflector above the rear glass on my 97 explorer its about 1" wide and about 12" lond it doesnt lite up at the moment is it supposed to cheers

Should light up! Its a brake light!

The ballast is probably blown. Not a very easy or cost-friendly fix.

BTW, nobody better say anything about swapping bulbs.

Try swapping the bulbs; that usually works

Brake Light

I had the same problem a few years ago on my 97X Sport. I thought I could replace just the bulb, but at that time Ford only sold the complete ballast with all of the bulbs in a unit. It was prohibitively expensive as I recall, well over $ 100.

Try the junkyards, because they are very expensive.
I checked once and Ford wanted $240.00US for the damn thing. I picked one up at the junkyard for $30.00.
