This is interesting stuff. I had an 03 4.0 Explorer and ran Mobil 1 from the start. I traded for an 05 with a 4.0 and just moved to Mobil 1 5W30 this afternoon (from what I presume was standard 5W30 mineral oil). What I thought I heard was more like a exhaust manifold leak, but marbling seems to describe it too. Happens at idle. Mine has 23K on it and is still under warranty.

I'm gonna disconnect the battery for awhile and then restart. I saw the pre-det comments related to the oil ... and who knows. The 4.0 remains one of the few Ford / Honda motors that 5W20 is NOT the recommended oil ... HOW COME ...?? Even my 2002 3.0 Ranger calls for the lighter Visc. oil

Any ideas as to why? I'd never thought about it, but now, I've got some sort of noise .. VERY ODD .... I'm betting on the electronics ... Otherwise .., why all the sudden ...? I didn't all the sudden develop heavy carbon on my pistons with a 23K motor.

Razz

My problem was not carbon in the cylinder it was carbon in the block. A by product of used and worn motor oil. Well the pump is done. Found out why i was having a problem with oil pressure, wasn't the pump after all, changed it anyway while I was in there. It was carbon build up ont he oil pump screen. It literally cutoff all the oil flow, couldn't even blow air through it. 14 hrs. on my back between saturday and sunday. There is just enough room to squeeze the pan by if you release the motor mounts and drop the front differential. Just remember to make sure you tighten everything properly before you put it all back together( lol ) that would suck to have to pull apart again for a loose screw.:us:
Oh yeah I am switching to 10W30 Mobil1 the next time I do an oil change.

Oil Pressure??

Well my day off is tommorow, I might take off the valve covers, do another seafoam intake session, then remove the spark plugs for further Identification.

I'd like to clairify, it only makes these sounds while idling!

I had heard great things on this forum about Mobil1 and I still feel that it was the right choice, and was worth the few extra bucks to put it in.

You really think that switching to 5-20 would eliminate the sounds?

Im not trying to blame the oil, or the filter.. Same oil and the same filter I had used prevously. I think there is something wrong with the engine. Hydrolic Lifter maybe? I'm going to try to go and get a recording.

Pulling into school today I had a few friends hovering around my Xplorer, they all told me to park it. Was a nail to my heart. They aren't mechinicly inclined so i won't kill myself over it, but I just thought I'd throw that in as a reference.

What is your oil pressure running at when you idle and it makes all this noise. Oh yeah these Xplorers don't like 5W20 oil, if your going to change grades go to a 10W30.:us:

Seafoam treatment

I cant believe i came across this post...I have posted a thread about a motor knock and marble sound from my 2000 x sport with the OHV motor at 98K miles. When i bought the truck only a bout a month ago i drove it a little over 200 miles to get home and there was no noise and the truck ran great. After the second day i decided to give it a full detail and change the oil. As soon as i changed the oil BANG,,,,,marble sounds and diesel sounds. I shut it off quick thinking i did something wrong but after 15 minutes going over everything i noticed there was nothing wrong. The next day i drove for about 30 minutes and then came back home and changed the oil once again. This time i went with 10/30 castrol. I have used castrol 10/30 in all my cars year around and never encountered any issues. I used seafoam a few times through the brake booster but the sound is there. Only at idle, no smoke and on top of that the truck runs great. I have found some a few things from doing some research.....

TSB #01197 -- SOME VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE 4.0L OHV ENGINE MAY EXHIBIT AN ENGINE NOISE WHICH MAY BE PERCEIVED BY THE CUSTOMER AS A PISTON / ONNECTING ROD BEARING KNOCK. *TT (NHTSA ID #627752, OCTOBER 01 2001)

The next thing i am going to do is a few more seafoam tries and an oil change to synthetic. Its worth the try. If that doesnt work the nearest and highest cliff will come into affect. I am going to be reading this post every day to see if any more ideas.

I still cant believe FORD would allow this.

I did the Seafoam treatment to the Engine block, I believe this is what caused all my recent misery, and one hell of a cold weekend to change an oil pump. Won't use it again! I'll continue using my Mobil1 and Lucas Synthetic additive. Works great for quieting these 4.0's:us:

Winter Viscosity Change

Oh i NEVER said it was at fault. I think the viscosity is. I had 5w30 blend in there, and it did it, i switched to 5w20, and it went away. I just said the quaker state because thats whet i have. the 5w30 it not the right winter oil. I think its the fact its 5w30, not mobil 1. ive used that before too, and think its GREAT oil. I just decided to try this new stuff for fun, and i like it just as much. IM saying keep synthetic, do not switch back, use a lower # like 5-20 for winter!

You shouldn't have to change oil wieghts for winter and summer. These things call for 5W30 for reason. If your going to change grades go to 10W30. 5W20 is to light for these motors from what I have seen so far. My 4.0 made even more noise when I tried the lighter oil.:us:
