This is a true story. A testament to the 4.0 ohv durability.

Back in 1995 my wife and I leased a 1995 sport with the 4.0 ohv. Shortly (>1000 miles) after the first oil change (3500 miles) at Valvoline she was driving on the highway and the truck died. She called me and said the check gauge light went on there was a LOUD bang, shutter and then it went dead. When I got there and looked at the truck I saw that the oil filter was missing! I had it towed to a local Ford store (not where we leased it) because we leased it 50 miles away. Upon inspection Ford said yes your filter fell off its Valvolines fault. I called VIOC they said no, there is no way we did it. I went to look at the truck and noticed that not only did the filter fall off but also the stud that the filter screws onto was missing (now it looked like Ford’s fault).

Anyway to make a LONG story short my original dealer said DRIVE it to them and if it blows up they may be able to warranty it. So I started the sport (with no oil in it) and proceeded to drive on the highway (65 mph) until something happened! I made it 35 miles before a Hugh bang and shudder stalled the truck and I pulled to the berm. Looked underneath and found nothing, had it towed to my dealership and the mechanic turned the key and it started and sounded fine….amazing!!

Two month’s of finger pointing and VIOC finally paid for a brand new 4.0…Ford paid for the loaner. The mechanic said except for bearing wear it NEVER blew up.

I am not surprised, they are a work horse and you can't kill them typically.

Heat is the enemy.

Of course it would not have been a good idea to run that engine without a rebuild :)
