4.0 or 4.6???

Better go with the 4.6, the way you keep reminding us that you're a v-8 kind of guy i think you're going to be let down with anything less, which the v6 will be (in terms of horsepower)

straight up, take it from a guy who bought an 03 4.0 to save a few bucks, and then sold it to buy the 4.6l. you will not be happy with the amount of power the 4.0 has compaired to your old 4.6L, go ahead and spend the extra 800 or so to get the 4.6l bud, its more than worth it.

Get the V8 and definitely get the 3V, the factory tune is quite conservative so plan on an xcal3 with a tune and you'll be grinning ear to ear. I am a V8 person and I know I couldn't live with the 4.0.

I too had trouble tracking down a V8 used. I was surprised at how rare the V8 really is.

I bought an 07 v6 EB 4x4 with the tow package and 3.73 gearing. It has been a great truck. It pulls my 4000 pound boat/trailer just fine.

I've got a good friend with a V8 LTD and his real world milage is a fair amount worse than mine. The V8 also doesn't really feel that much more powerful.

If you don't need to tow more than 4000 or so, and it sounds like you don't, you'll be fine with the 4.0.

the v8 didnt seem all that much more powerfull?!? are you kidding? did you stick your foot in that v8? it gets to 60 in just under 7 seconds... your v6 takes over 9... i find it hard to believe you didnt notice a difference lol. Also the v8 makes almost 100 horses more than the v6. and an extra 70 ft/lbs... personaly id take the V8 every time over the v6 having owned and driven both.

Can't count how many times I have heard some say they should have had a V8. :)

Just out of curiosity, I just did a search on AutoTrader.com for 2006-2009 Explorers within 100miles of my zip code and found- 14 with V8 and 255 with the V6! That's barely 5% with the V8, at least in my area and for sale at present. I'm sure the overall percentage of Explorer production with the V8 is at least 10%+, maybe even 15%...it would be very interesting to a breakdown of production numbers for the V6 and V8.

I have the same setup as you ('07 Eddie Bauer, V6, 3.73 axle ratio) except mine is just the 2WD. The V6 makes 254lb-ft of torque @ 3700rpm compared to the V8's 300lb-ft @ 3950rpm. Under light to moderate acceleration, the V8 may not seem that much different than the V6, especially with the 3.73 gearing and slightly lower weight in the V6's favor. BUT, when you put your foot into it, the V8 and 6-speed automatic make a HUGE difference! And the sounds coming from the V8 are enough to make you want to roll the windows down, turn the radio off and floor it! =)

Not that I don't love my 4.0L V6 just fine....I'd probably get in trouble with the V8! ;):D

lol. mines sure got me into some trouble with the law..

I have owned 5 Explorers and have 2 currently, all with 4.0L V6's. I drove a V8 looking to replace my 02. My 08 seems to be louder than my 02 V6, however driving the V8 down the road, it was hands down quieter than my 08 V6. It was definately quicker too, however the 4.0L had the options we were looking for and has been a rock solid engine for Ford over the years. I have 110K miles on my 02 and it does not burn or leak a drop of oil. Go with what you think you want. Gas mileage should be comparable.

Ok, Bought this today........

2007 Premier with all options...4.6 AWD

I just had to have a 4.6.....

The reason you see so many 4.0 is that Ford did such a good deal on leases in 06 and 07 that the standard cheape Eddie Bauer lease was a 4.0, the option of 4.6 drove the lease up like 80.00 a month, nobody took it...

I had a hard time finding what i wanted, I have every option besides the moving foot pedals...???...??? has DVD, Navigation, moon roof, 4.6... AWD.... leather...heated seats...power 3 rd row..... could not believe the pedal mover was not there!!!

Truck is sweet!!

4 Explorers and now a Mountaineer! I am calling it Johnny5!

I just like V-8's...do not use Explorer/mountaineer for towing....

Bessey does the work!!!!

lol i like you. I need to make the ultimate ford.. a dualy Excursion with the 7.2L XD. lol.

Congrats on the merc, that is a CLEAN looking 4th gen.

Congrats on the Mounty. The 3-valve + the 6 speed is a sweet combo.

Yah, we got a similar Mounty, with no nav or moonroof, but with the moving pedals and the folding running boards. In 6 years with the 96 Exploder we opened the moon roof maybe 3 times, and too many nav units get torn out of dashboards around here, I'd rather have the thieves just break a window and take a GPS I can replace for $99 at Wal-Mart.

The only downside to owning a beige Mercury (err, White Chocolate Tri-Coat) is that it makes me feel like an old man, especially when the running boards unfold for me. I have to fight the urge to buy one of those jaunty driver's caps and plaid pants. :)

wanted the folding running boards, the regular ones collect alot of snow, I love this color, makes it feel "classy" to me...

I wanted a moon roof no matter what I have always wanted one and love them..

Congrats, nice looking ride!

Nothing wrong with being a V8 guy. I just wanted to add my perception as an owner. I've driven both and, for me, driving around town and even on the hwy, the V6 has plenty of power. Contrary to the EPA sticker, the V8 will give you better milage on the hwy but, not around town.

When I want to go fast, I take my plane. Nobody will give me a ticket for doing 140mph in the sky.

Glad you found what you wanted.

Congrats on the new mounty! Its kinda funny you mentioned about the snow. Saturday after the snow had stopped I went out and when i was leaving the car i forgot there was snow on there and slipped right off onto my ass. Im sure it was funny for the guy walking his dog behind me haha

Ford offered many options à la carte instead of grouped into packages, so there are some unusual combinations out there. Power Adjustable Pedals were one of those solo options and it sounds like your found one with every other option except that one!

If it's any consolation, I have the Power Adjustable Pedals in my '07 Eddie Bauer and I don't find them very useful. Then again, I'm 6'3" and I'm sure they'd be a great safety feature for a shorter driver (so they wouldn't be sitting so close to the airbag).

The only features that I wanted but didn't get were the Power Running Boards and the 18" Chrome wheels. But I can always upgrade the the 18" wheels down the road....

Congrats on the new Mounty! Just curious- does it have Camel or Charcoal Black interior? And it has the metallic trim on the center stack and door panels instead of woodgrain, if I'm not mistaken. They give the Mercury models some very sharp looking interiors, IMO! ;)

Thanks!

As far as pedals, I don't care but the wife liked them in the last Explorer so she was further away from steering wheel.

I have the camel interior, I wanted charcoal but it was hard to find....I found one out of 30 trucks I saw within 150 miles of me
