Explorer Forum Covers the Explorer ST, Explorer Sport, Explorer Sport Trac, Lincoln Aviator, Mercury Mountaineer, Mazda Navajo, Ford Ranger, Mazda Pickups, and the Ford Aerostar
There are probably 1000 posts asking similar questions in the archives. A good idea is to put one or both of the forum's search tools to work and search for past threads.
Reason I say this is I asked a similar question 5 or so years ago when I joined and hardly got any hits. The SOHC V6 has been around since 1997 and this forum has been around almost that long. Lots of threads on the subject.
A word of warning. Exhaust choices are very personal. What one person likes, another might hate. I had a SOHC Explorer for several years and had good luck with a Flowmaster 50 series. I tried a Magnaflow on the same truck and it sounded like crap. VERY ricey to me and droned like crazy. I've seen others that take the counter-view. Try and scour Youtube and see if there are soundbites/vids there. That might help you as well.
Also, SOHC sounds a LOT different than OHV so be wary of those offering advice that don't actually have a SOHC.
spintech. By far the best sounding muffler for a sohc 4.0. Without a doubt! Get rid of the cats after the o2 sensor and have a custom y-pipe built into a 2.75 dynomax bullit or comprable staright through style muffler and add about 18 inches of tubing to a 2.5 or 2.75 spintech and you will love the sound if you like an agressive sound. I personally think flowmasters sound like crap on v-6s and dont much like them on v-8s anymore either. I did this on both my rangers with oohc 4.0s and my buddies Explorer with the same motor. The explorer has slightly bigger exaust tubing from the factory so it will be a little louder/richer sounding
i found on flowmaster a 50 series that soundes pretty nice i think im gunna go with that and see what it sounds like and if it sounds like **** then im gunne try that spintech

I had a Flowmaster SUV 50 Series on mine and it was great. Came highly recommended when I did the deed about 5 years ago. There are some reviews here (including mine).

I like the Spin Tech sound. I've run them on several various project vehicles in the past and have never been let down. I'm going to use Spin Tech on the truck when the time comes.
I have a cherry bomb Vortex cat back system on my soch engine and the truck has a nice rumble at idle and take off and sounds really throaty while cruising and most of t he rpm range.
