Hello, Thank you for letting me join your forum!! I recently bought a 2000 Explorer w/ 4.0 SOHC engine. 124k miles. Thank God I picked it up at a great price. It was one owner & in great shape body wise. I've always been a fan of this body style. Thats why I went back to it. I had six before this one. In the past, I bought them at about 1 yr old & under warranty and traded before 50k miles. Never any problems/worries. This one has the timing chain noise at cold start up. I want to have the problem fixed. I know its expensive. I would like to just replace the engine while its still running. My question is, what is the newest engine that will work in this vehicle? On mine, the 8th vin digit is E. Its an automatic & 4wd. Non flex fuel. I've heard you can put a "newer" engine ('03-'04)in where the chain problem is no longer an issue. Is that true?
