hi guys. Need some help here.have 2 door sport 2001 4.0 SOHC . More details: new motorcraft fuel pump installed 3 years ago ( got whole unit from ra ), fuel filter replaced maybe 7 k ago. Got 2 sets of injectors trued them both to eliminate jerking. I did timing job and I guess it started jerking after that. Since I put set of injections from eBay when put everything back finishing timing job, I suspected them could cause jerking ( it starts at 50-55 and if I move my feet from accelerator and gently push it again it goes away. Same with when it runs on cruise control- pushing brakes and gently accelerating will fixes the issue. It’s not jerking on low speed. Starting at 50-55 . Now I have additional problem . It stalling in a few miles. Could stall while idling couple of times a months. Any idea what could be causing that ? You guys always helping Me out when I mess up) respectfully . Max in Houston

If the timing job was done perfectly, fuel pump has enough pressure, injectors are fine and there is no misfire
i would say it is the transmission/valvebody/solenoids what causes the issue.
May be the throttle position sensor is out of specs, egr valve stuck...
Any DTC's?

Hi . Thanks for replying. All solenoids are new , I replaced them couple of years ago while replacing the gasket . All motorcraft . What is DTS? Egr is new . Throttle position sensor is new motorcraft.

Any codes?

On the 5R55E, the torque converter locks up at 50mph. Taking your foot off the gas and/or stepping on the brake unlocks the converter…before it locks up again. A slipping torque converter can cause a shudder that feels like a misfire, or sometimes like driving over rumble strips.

When you do this to make it go away, how long before it comes back? Does it do this when you select OD OFF on the shift column and drive at highway speed?

Hi . Thank you for stepping in. Now that you mention torque converter I feel like it is the problem. Didn’t have money to replace it while was doing timing job . I didn’t try OD yet., my old action scanner shows zero codes . When it goes away it may come back in 30-40 minutes or couple of days later. Sometimes not going away for 10-15 minutes no matter what I do with acceleration. Another problem I face: it stalled on me 3 times 2 miles . What that could be ? I got to drive it because my daily driver needs major repairs which I will do while driving explorer . I’m terrible at diagnosing the problem and really appreciate you guys stepping in . I will check throttle position sensor like Wollimann suggested. I remember replacing it I had a hard time screwing it back to intake, maybe it Misaligned. mass air flow is new . Fuel pump is new .

Stalled on you while stopped?

What is DTS?
Diagnostic Trouble Code's. Only sensors cause codes, so i think it's a mechanical problem.
I had a problem years ago, the engine stalls only in sharp left corners, not ever but sometimes.
Very dangerous if you stay on a crossing with died engine, but it starts again as nothing happens.
The Ford shop changed the EGR valve and the differental pressure feedback electronic sensor, no more problems
anymore.
And there where no trouble codes while this happens. If an engine stalls something must be wrong with the fuel/air ratio
i believe.

Stalled on you while stopped?
Nope. While running. I was going 30 miles per hour, maybe 35 and it stalled. I started it again it was running good for a mile and stalled again. Same speed moving in traffic. Than it did in again on my way back home ( I decided to go back home and not drive it )

I will check those .

I will check egr - maybe it is not connected properly I dig more into on that other sensor . Is it the one with 2 ports on driver side near valve cover?

Check fuel pressure especially when it is acting up

Watch live data you can watch the pcm command the shift solenoids and tcc solenoid for the converter lock… see how the transmission responds or if your lock and unlock (tcc solenoid) maybe causing the stalling

But to me it sounds like a fuel delivery issue

thank you for the input. I will start

I will be working on it next week. What kind of obd scanner can read all that information? I have very old and simple actron which read and erase codes only but my bodies may have one capable to that. Other than fuel pressure test what else can I do to start diagnosing the fuel delivery issues? Thank you for your help. Max

Fuel pressure must be read manually, from the schraeder port on the fuel rail. You can run a long hose to a diagnostic pressure gauge inside the cabin, or secured to the windshield wipers where you can see it

Hi . My fuel pressure is 68 psi . I run long hose and at all speeds run 68 . At the end it stalls on me few times. Trip to hardware store for long hose and way back everything was fine. At the end of 20 min trip stalled 3 times. 1 st time and in a few seconds after I started it and in 30 seconds. Parked it now . I checked throttle position sensor- it sits properly. Run through vacuum lines- seems like everything attached to each other. 68 is too high? I googled it says 65 max .

68 is perfect

I'm just throwing this out there and it's not very common but I would check my coil pk for cracks And overheating signs of heat

Fuel psi checked out good job

A Live data scanner would be helpful

Most decent scanners can do this these days
I use a “launch 123”‘from Amazon it does just about everything I need in the shop
Including abs pump Bleeding and diesel testing
Any way to get a video of what happens when it stalls? Does it just flat die, or does it run out of talent and no amount of throttle will keep it alive? Does it
Lose battery power? Dash functions?

Hi . Thank you . I will check it out. It was replaced couple of years ago with oem one but I will check it out to eliminate it.

Lose battery power? Dash functihi. I don’t think there are any dash lights. I was driving yesterday and noticed my oil pressure gauge is down and I realized that it stalled on me again. There were no leash lights I believe. I will take it for a ride and try to make is video. And I will pay close attention to what lights come on or if they comes on at all. Thank you.

I will also check launch on eBay/Amazon . I always want a good one but every time run through scary stories of people who got scanners from eBay/Amazon and scanners stopped running in a while.

It could be crank sensor if you are just losing spark

Could be pcm rely if you lose whole engine and fuel pump

Coil pack checked. No cracks or any sort of damage. I replaced it with denso from RA when I was doing timing job.
