hmm
I have two questions
1: how available is 2.9 bellhousing off a mid 80's ranger?
2: external slave or is internal o.k.?
3. external slave interference with exhaust,

If a junkyard will sell you a bellhousing alone, you are in luck. Usually around here they don't want to seperate it from the tranny.

An external slave would be cool as it would be WAY easier to change in the event of failure. I have a feeling an internal would be easier for space reasons. The slave's size would determine if it would have interference with anything. I would guess yes because of all the stuff crammed in there already.

They are internal now, so leaving it internal wouldn't change it from how it is now.

My question. Why a 3550 and not a 4500? What are the specs on a 3550? I know the 4500 has granny low and OD and it can handle a lot of power, but what is the 3550 rated for?

yes an nv4500 will be included in our plans, but most mazda/explorer wanting nv4500 have v8 power. Atlas is the only way from there. that is a tall tranny, body lift? I would say yes

The NV 3500 is a "light / medium duty" truck transmission. The Dodge Ram 1500 & 2500 come with this tranny. NOTE: There are a number of variants of this transmission depending upon the yaer and vehicle.

Wide Ratio on the Ram 1500:
1st 4.01
5th 0.73

Narrow ratio on the Ram 2500:
1st 3.49
5th 0.73

Input torque is 300 ft-lb

There is a NV3500 HD (not available on Dodge):
1st 3.49
5th 0.73

Input torque rating: 340 ft-lb

They all have the following:

Max GVWR: 7,200 lb
Max GCVWR: 11,000 lb
Fluid Capacity: 4.8 pints to the bottom of the fill plug
Weight (with oil): 110 lb

The NV 4500:

1st 5.61
5th 0.75

Synchronizers: Carbon fiber composite
Input shaft: 1-1/8" 10 spline (V8 version - order code DDP)
Input shaft: 1-1/4" 10 spline (Diesel, V10 version - order code DDX)
4x4 Output shaft: 1-1/2" 29 spline
Input torque rating: 460 ft-lb
Max GVWR: 16,000 lb
Max GCVWR: 21,000 lb
Cast Iron Case, Weight (with oil): 250 pounds
Fluid Capacity: 8 pints

The reverse gear and forward gears 1-4 are mounted inside the main transmission case. 5th gear is mounted in the tailshaft assembly.

The 450 Lb-ft input rating is a continuous and conservative input rating for a long transmission life. The transmission can easily withstand higher torque from diesels with aftermarket power kits, but transmission life will be reduced in proportionately. Keep in mind that 5th gear has failed on some trucks that regularly pull or haul heavy loads.

Hmmmmmm....

I wouldn't want a NV3550 strictly beacuse first gear is only 4:1 on a wide ratio.

The NV4500 has a much better first gear and would be more desireable strictly because of that.
