on a mountaineer 4.0 what does the HC mean on the top of the motor?any other engines interchange on this,chain broke and is sticking out the housing,valve damage?thanks

I think it used to say SOHC = Single Over Head Cam. Common failure with this engine. Your engine is now junk. Ford started using this engine in '97 and, as far as I know, didn't redesign the timing chain components until around 2005. Any Ford 4.0L SOHC engine will work (Explorer, Mountaineer or Mustang), but you'll just use the long-block and transfer over everything else from your old engine. I would not install a used SOHC engine without first replacing the timing chain components as the engine has to be out of the truck to do the job.
