has anybody out there had problems with their 91-94 4.0L engine running extremely rough at idle after it's been on a long trip (at least 2 hours or so)? well, mine has. it feels like it's about to vibrate out from underneath me when i come to idle at a stop light or something after driving for a really long time (like from home to college, for example). if i give it a little gas while it's idling, the vibration goes away, but comes back again when the RPMs drop back down. this has been going on for over a year now, and we have had the truck looked at by several places, including a ford dealership. we've had several things done to it - new spark plugs, belt, idler pulley (it was about to fall out from being too rusted, so that was a good thing), plug wires were fine. also put on a new fuel pressure regulator last year, along with a k&n filter, and was told that the EGR valve could have something to do with it as well (but we haven't gotten around to changing that yet). does anybody here have a clue what i'm talking about? i mean, come on, all these people on this forum with the exact same year, engine, whatever, that i have, somebody has to have heard of this before. i hope you can help me get this problem fixed, because the explorer only has 123k miles on it, and i was hoping to drive it until it had at least 160 or 170k miles on it... anyway, thanks for your help.

has your checkengine light ever triggered on these trips? even if it just blinked on then went out? i hade a similar problem.... it was with my o2 sensors.... you could replace the egr too...they arent that expensive

my 97 like to idle rough after about an hour of driveing, when im at a drive through or something it starts to shake and ****. the check engine light has come on we took it to the dealer and they said it was a 02 sensor. it came on about a week later and they said they would take care of it.....it has never came back on, they probly disabled it for all i know

jim, yes the check engine light does come on during these trips. but sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. thanks for the o2 sensor tip. i'll look into having both the o2 sensors and the egr valve replaced sometime in the near future. by the way, i did run my $30 autozone code scanner test on it a while back, and the only two codes it gave me were the ones that had nothing to do with any problem the engine could be having. :-\
