4.0L exhaust

There's going to be a lift open at the shop Thursday and Friday, so I am going to cut out the resonator, and replace the running boards. If I cut out the cats, will it throw a code? Next summer, I just might redo my setup, go 2.5" true duals or something. What would happen if I put say two glasspacks end to end on it?

It sounds pretty bad in my opinion. Straight pipes and the glasspack. Not really that louder just a whole lot messier. That 40 is going back on today

zoso,

didnt like the glass pack ?

kstrayhorn,

dont mess with the cats on your y-pipe, you will throw codes... just drop the resonator, and call it a day

kstrayhorn,
I agree with caldwell. Don't mess with the cats on there.

will do, need to find the right length/size pipe at a local parts store, cut out the resonator, and be done with it!

will you be cutting the resonator out yourself, or having someone do it ?

Well i finally got the exhaust done, 2.5" pipe from the Y back and a glasspack, its loud and sounds pretty good.

jdt post a sound clip

Curious to see how that sounds too as I plan on something similar. Also was busy Thursday/friday so I didn't get around to the resonator but yeah I was and going to do it myself whenever I find time.

I just replaced the flowmaster with a cherry bomb turbo II muffler. Really quiet now. I got tired of the loud flowmaster. The cherry bomb won't be there for long but I'll look into something else like a magnaflow or a borla.

What is the diameter of the stock piping on a 2003 4.0L? I just ordered the the Magnaflow catback, which uses 2.5, so is the rest of the stock system 2.5 or 2.25?

If it is 2.25, would it be worth it to have the exhaust shop replace the y pipe and intermediate pipe with new stainless and the correct diameter to match the 2.5 muffler while we're at it - or is it OK to leave it as is? Does Magnaflow make a y pipe for these trucks? A pic of a stock system from underneath would really help.

I hope that made sense.

Thanks!

Don't have a pic at this point, but I think it would be worth it. Stock piping should be 2.25" assuming you have the V6 4.0L. But the V8 should be 2.5" if I am correct. I have 2.25" piping and put a 2.5" in/out muffler on, no problem. The thing is now that I have done the muffler, I have the fever! I am looking forward to replacing the entire system with 2. 5" piping sometime. Assuming you would be subject to the same situation, it would be cheaper to just go ahead and replace the entire thing since I will have to pay to run the pipe and then I will be out $40 for the original install. However, it is not necessary to replace any piping, so it is ok to leave it as it currently is. As for the y, I know that most exhaust companies do make various piping pieces, so you should look at either Jegs.com or summitracing.com or some similar site for those pieces, but if it was me, I would just have it run from the back of the y or even from the back of the cats. Hope this helps,
Kendal

I would assume that they have to widen the end of the stock 2.25" pipe to fit into the 2.5" muffler, or is there an adapter they can use?

They are talking about welding everything together instead of clamping. Is there an issue with welding stainless steel to the stock non-stainless that would cause corrosion over time?

a good exhaust shop will have no problem with expanding the stock pipe size to match a slightly larger pipe...

i have 2.5'' stainless pipe welded to the 2.5'' factory pipe coming off the Y with no issues..

thanks for all your help - i will have it installed on Monday and will try to take pics/video

I am thinking for my X...
Get the muffler 2.5" first....then later-on...get the piping swapped from the reducer to the back of the truck.
Or should I just get it all done at once?

first off, on the previous post, they did not use a reducer at all, just put a loooot of weld there to fill the gap, I looked at it and no leaks, so I'm not going to complain.

Nate, what you are talking about doing is what I did. In retrospect, if you know that you are going to redo the exhaust like you say, it would be easier to just go ahead and have the whole thing done. I kind of wish I would have now...

Reducer, weld whatever you want to call it. Either way its a reducer of some sort.
I am going to head down to the auto shop to talk to the mechanic and see how much a 2.5" pipe costs. Probably cheaper to have it all done at once rather than just one piece at a time.
