4.0L exhaust

Are the cats before the y pipe? I'm only wondering this because when you guys run 2.5 after the y pipe do they go through stock cats or are those before the y pipe?

Ok....Went to SPS service center...the guy quoted me $160 just for a muffler...anywhere from $320-350 (price includes labor) for a 2.5" pipe from the reducer to the end of the truck.
Midas...told me they didn't sell flow master, so the muffler is $110-130 and they said $150-$250 for installation (with 2.5" pipe)

Cats are before the y-pipe.

So running 2.5 pipe wouldn't touch the cats at all?

Greeneyez,

The Cats are located almost directly behind the exhaust manifolds ( stock headers ) on the Y-pipe. running a 2.5'' CBE, you should not come anywhere close to messing with either of the cats...

so let me throw a wrench into what i preach about exhaust, as it is one of my favorite mods on a vehicle...

as some of you know my current set up is 2.5'' pipe from the Y-pipe back, and my exhaust runs under my rear axle, and exits at a 45 behind my rear tire... This set up would be good, for a street truck, such as JARVIS's Dual Set Up...

so i have been thinking that im going to go back to the exhaust shop again, in the near future, and have the pipe run over my rear axle, as it should be. this time though i think i may experiment with slightly larger piping. this is the set up that i have been simply thinking about since i just want to have the exhaust routed back over the axle again.

2.5'' pipe off the Y-pipe, into the magnaflow ( same as it currently is ). Then run 2.75'' pipe from the magnaflow, and over the rear axle...

I cant speculate really if I would see even better gains then what i already have ( maybe or maybe not ), but i would venture to say the the exhaust tone may become slightly deeper. I just figured since im going to be rerounting my exhaust in the near future, that i mine as well take one last shot testing a exhaust set up for my 4.0

any thoughts or comments ?

Sounds like a good idea. I'm happy to hear your going over the axle again I didn't want to hear you got caught on your brand new pipe on a rock or something. I look forward to see what you think.

You have to watch how big of a pipe you go. I was thinking going a 2.75 on my exhaust but don't know how good it will be. If you go too big then you may lose performance, because of the high amounts of back pressure (correct me if I am wrong). I think at a 2.75 you should be fine on the exhaust.
A over the axle exhaust for a guy like me works well. What I was doing the other day off-road, it was better to have the over axle exhaust. If I had an under axle exhaust my exhaust pipe probably would have snapped or gotten extremely damaged by the end :D

For my exhaust plans, I plan on purchasing a gibson exhaust. Over the axle (I think) and its got the 2.5" pipe. After I install my exhaust, I think I will then go to the exhaust shop and get the reducer taken off for a complete 2.5" pipe from the cats to the tip.

I hope that gibson works out for you I always thought about buying that cbe so I'd had my 2.5 pipe and everything and if I didn't like the sound of the muffler chopping it off and getting a new one put on.

Good as any idea. I'm thinking of that too. If I hate how it sounds cut off the muffler. I'd save the muffler for whenever I decide to purchase my ranger. Ranger's with a gibson exhaust, in my opinion, sound AWESOME :D

So since I will have access to a twin post lift whenever I get my exhaust, I am probably going to do all the work myself. Any suggestions for when I install my exhaust?

Nate,

A gibson exhaust should sound really good on your X, supported with your intake set up

I dont think going from the end of the muffler ( 2.5'' ) to 2.75'' pipe over the rear axle will not have any real negative effects, considering the exhaust gases will be escaping quicker allowing, for better combustion of air, and fuel in the engine, which will increase performance, but i will not be at an optimum level of performance.

when you have an intake / exhaust set up, your computer adjusts the ( Air/Fuel Ratio ). this is what causes the " TQ loss " commonly associated with installing a new exhaust on our X's. I believed in this also, but then did some reading into the subject, and the key basically comes back to the ( A/F Ratio ) to see optimal performance gains from your intake/exhaust combo, your going to need a tune, to get the best balance. the result once you retune your X will be peak HP/TQ/MPG gains...

Hope that made sense...

heres a suggestion for the install...

sawzalls makes getting the factory exhaust off quicker lol

Random thought I still want the foreign ranger crew cab 3.0 oil burners haha. Post some pics of how it looks when you do and made a sound vid of it.

I'm not planning on doing an exhaust at least for another few months. The plan is to try to do an exhaust anywhere from november to february. Just not enough money availible to do an exhaust any time soon, because I just had all new brakes put on (expensive).
I am thinking it will be worth the money to do an exhaust plus tuning it to give me max mpg trq hp etc like caldwell mentioned. I am hoping to do a tune by next summer.

Yea I planned on buying some major hardware too maybe exhaust or a bunch of aux lights but apparently my tires are running out and I'm looking at a nice bit of cash for new rubber.

jdt ur exhaust sounds awesome r u ever gonna put duals or just stay with single exhaust

I know the question has been answered, but I wanted to post a visual. I apologize for how muddy the underside of my truck is :D So everything is tan

The catalytic converters are circled in red. On the left right after the cat is the y-pipe.
The transmission is in between the two cats, as you can see the large transmission oil pan is sitting in the center of the photo.

Thanks the visual really helps any chance I could ask where that 3rd cat which is a resonator I hear about.

Alright...I went a took a few pictures (I'll add more ASAP)...from what I gather this is it...

The blue circle is your Y-pipe (thats for reference purposes) The red circle is the resonator.

Anyone know if I have the resonator??? I think so but can't tell without having a comparison.

Nate you do not have a resonator. you have the same exhaust as me... its just 2.5'' pipe that reduces to 2.25'' right before that clamp
