I've done a complete timing job on my daughters 05 4.0l sohc and I not only used the correct tooling but even have alldata on it, who was aparrently as confused as I am, as i found a few mistakes in their guide. when torn down, both the cams seemed to be pretty close if not perfectly in time, guides in place and undamaged, however the balance shaft chain tensioner and guide, were shattered. Got it timed up and installed only to be disappointed with a no start, which upon checking all the usual suspects, I determined it must be the pass side being out of timing because driver side all three hitting perfectly...... pass side straight misfires from all three cyls.... nope I checked and rechecked and timing seems right. So my question is this..... is the timing at the camshaft so touchy that even with the proper tooling it can still be off so bad all three cylinders on that side have zero compression and/or does the 4.0 sohc tend to have issues with bent valves or the heads warping or leaking head gaskets that is more likely the issue?

Thanks in advance.

The timing isn’t hyper critical. These if these jump time they can absolute eat the valves.

Also, even if you were wildly out of time, you’d still build compression, granted the valves didn’t get damaged.

Thats what I was leaning towards, thanks for the input. IM an old school pushrod era guy so when dealing with these newer animals I question everything lol

When you did the timing did you verify the camshafts in the correct position before installing the hold down tool that goes into, the notches arent perfectly centered and it is possible even using the tool to install the shaft 180 degrees off which wont bend the valves but would cause no compression
