Assumin it is all the same year model stuff it should just bolt in . The 8.8 rears the only difference between open and Ls is the carrier and they can be interchanged but would require resetting up the gears.

Yes, I have done this upgrade!

Your axle is the same as the 1991-2000 explorers. Except that the brakes were Drum from 91 till 94. So if you want to upgrade to LS, then all you would have to do, is get a LS carrier complete with spider gears, (any gear ration, thou you do not need the ring gear, since you will be re-using yours.) I would suggest that you get new Bearings, and maybe new clutches, both depending on how many miles on the LS carrier. You would have to re-use your Ring gear since it is already matched to your Pinion gear. Now let me tell you this, It could be a difficult process to get the correct ammount of backlash set, I believe you have to change shims, and stuff like that. If I were you, I'd have someone who know what they are doing, do the job for you. But my point here is that you do NOT have to change your Axle to obtain LS, just change your Carrier. Sometimes you can find LS carriers here in the For Sale Forum, or E-Bay, sometimes even the Jeep guys sell them when they put the 8.8 in their Jeeps. I hope I have helped out, if you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me......

If you find a new enough one at a wrecking yard, take the whole differential and axles if the price is reasonable. I swapped out my 3.08 in my Ranger for a 3.73 after picking up the 3.73 at a wrecking yard for $150. It took me and a friend a few hours to change over the whole thing. I took the rear brakes off my 3.08 though since they were fairly new. I put about 25K on the 3.73 without any problems before I sold my Ranger. I drove around for half of that with the 3.08 in my bed until I found someone that wanted it.

Get some prices from wrecking yards and go from there. It might just be cheaper though to pay a shop to put a LS in your current rear-end.

I added an auburn to my rig. The main concern you should have is all ring and pinions are matched sets. Don't pull the carrier and LS out of one axle and put it in the other. Either swap axles entirely or replace the carrier. Setting backlash isn't that hard, but the lower the gears (numerically higher) th harder the job. The following link is a brief description of my 12 hour undertaking into the upgrade...

E-bay is always a good place to look, but becarefull to look for 31 spline vs 28 spline(used on Mustang's)
