4.6 compatibility between years

I have a 4.6 Engine from an 02 explorer. And have a 05 4.6 Explorer.

I know the 02 is drive by cable, and 05 drive by wire. Other than that are the two engines the exact same?

Basically if I rebuild the older engine will it work in the 05?

This might be something that you are the first to do. I think it is something you can do but how many snags you hit along the way is hard to estimate.

It sounds like just replacing the engine..

As far as the cable and wire throttle body, I would obviously just use the intake manifold and throttle body from the truck I’m fixing. And just throw away the cable stuff.

What I need to know is if the block and heads are the exact same between the 02 and 05.

Maybe check with RockAuto.com and compare part numbers. Or call some Auto Parts stores, or Automotive Machine Shops. I wouldn't recommend to call wrecking yards, they can be real idiots.
