got 195,000 miles on my 2010 4.6, and it's been burning oil. just curious if anyone else with a high-mileage 4.6 have the same issue?

How much is it burning?

i'd say a quart every two weeks or so. i'm just curious really. i'm normally very religious about the oil changes, but there was a period a couple years ago where i let it go about 20,000 miles over. i've always wondered if that contributed to the burning now. or if they're all getting like that with the higher mileage now

We have a 2008 with 250,000. I don't think it uses a quart between oil changes at 5,000 miles. It has had regular maintenance throughout its life.

Quart for two weeks seems to be a huge leak

If you didn't change the oil for 25k miles (20k miles plus whatever is your typical change interval) then I'm not sure what to tell you. There is probably severe sludge buildup and these engines don't tolerate sludge buildup. If it isn't leaking oil then it is burning it. How many miles do you drive for it to need a quart of oil? Most well maintained 4.6L 3V engines don't burn much, if any, oil as the miles rack up. Mine is getting close to 130k miles and doesn't burn a drop between 5k oil change intervals.

****. may have a problem then. there's no sludge, though. had a valve cover off when i changing the vvt solenoid, it was clean. but, and this is gonna sound stupid, i was changing the plugs and a screwdriver fell in the open hole. when i was pulling it out, i twisted it by accident and i could it stick. might be time for one of them borescope cameras! thanks all

EDIT: just for more info, i'm driving 36 miles a day. i'm normally a fanatic with car care, but gotta admit i've been slipping over the last or so. i'm thinking of keeping this car for a long time so was just curious if it's a common problem or just me. looks like it's just me!

Do you mean that the screw driver might have scoured the cylinder wall causing the oil burning issue? When did you nitice it was burning oil? Did it happen gradually or all at once?

Burning a quart every 500 miles is a lot. There is definitely a leak and/or it is burning a lot of oil. Does it make a puff of blueish smoke right after a cold start?

id say between the driver and the 20+k OCI thats bound to cause burning. i want to know which oil you are using, in case it happens to never sludge up! :D id genuinely be curious to take a look inside this engine pop the lower end apart look at the walls etc.

Before you do anything, check your PCV system.
